US Air Force to Conduct ICBM Test Launch in Southern California

The US Air Force is preparing to conduct a significant demonstration of its military prowess by launching an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in Southern California. The upcoming test aims to underscore the military's preparedness to utilize nuclear force if necessary.

The unarmed Minuteman III missile is scheduled to be launched from the Vandenberg Space Force Base, situated approximately 150 miles northwest of Los Angeles. The launch window is set between 11 p.m. on Tuesday and 5 a.m. on Wednesday, as announced by the Air Force Global Strike Command.

According to the command, the primary objective of the ICBM test launch program is to showcase the readiness of the US nuclear forces and instill confidence in the potency and efficiency of the nation's nuclear deterrent capabilities.

Emphasizing the routine nature of the launch, the command highlighted that such activities are meticulously planned years in advance to validate and affirm the effectiveness, readiness, and precision of the weapon system.

The Minuteman weapon system, a pivotal element of the US strategic defense system, traces its origins back to the 1950s and was initially deployed in the 1960s, as detailed on the USAF website.

Capable of covering a range of 6,000 miles and achieving speeds of 15,000 mph, the surface-based Minuteman III missiles are safeguarded in silos to shield them from potential enemy attacks. These silos are linked to an underground launch control center that is under constant monitoring by launch crews comprising two officers.

As per the US Air Force, there are a total of 400 Minuteman Missiles stationed at Space Force Bases in Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota, contributing to the nation's defense capabilities.

Global Strike Command affirmed that standard protocols would be followed, including transmitting a pre-launch notification in accordance with the Hague Code of Conduct. Additionally, the Russian government will be duly informed beforehand, aligning with existing bilateral obligations.
