Lindsey Graham Faces Backlash for Sexist Remark Directed at Danish PM

Feb 19 2026

During diplomatic discussions in Munich, Senator Lindsey Graham reportedly made headlines for a sexist remark directed at Denmark's Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen.

According to accounts from Danish newspaper Berlingske, Graham referred to Frederiksen as "little lady," delivering the comment while looking her "straight in the eye" and sneering. This incident has drawn significant attention and criticism.

The meeting included members of the U.S. House and Senate, alongside Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, focusing on discussions surrounding former President Trump’s threats to annex Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark and a NATO ally.

Puck was the first to report on Graham’s alleged outburst, citing sources who described him as "combative" and using "lots of F-bombs" during the talks. One observer characterized the situation as "Graham on his worst TV day."

Witnesses described the atmosphere as "disturbing," "shocking," and "extremely inappropriate," according to Berlingske. Another source claimed that Graham yawned directly in Nielsen’s face, an act perceived as mocking.

Prior to this incident, Graham was reportedly boasting about Trump and the extent of his influence. Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin, present at the meeting, was so taken aback by Graham's conduct that she left the room, only to return “visibly shaken.”

Slotkin had previously expressed concerns about American leaders potentially jeopardizing relationships with long-standing allies. “It takes a long time to build trust and an instant to lose it,” she remarked to Bloomberg’s Oliver Crook. “When you start acting erratically, when you act like a madman and no one knows what you’re going to do next, they can’t trust to make a deal with you.”

Frederiksen appeared unfazed by Graham's outburst, waiting for him to finish before stating, "when you're done with that, the meeting can continue."

Graham's controversial diplomatic style was further highlighted when he made dismissive comments to Politico regarding Denmark's relationship with Greenland. “Who gives a s*** who owns Greenland?” he stated. “The point is Greenland is going to be more fortified because Donald Trump, once he feels like it’s his brand or his buy-in, is going to go big.”
