Pam Bondi Engages in Heated Exchange with House Democrats Over Epstein Documents
Attorney General Pam Bondi found herself at the center of a fierce debate during a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday, where she defended her actions at the Department of Justice amidst pointed criticism from Democratic lawmakers.
As the hearing unfolded, Republicans largely rallied behind Bondi, steering clear of challenging questions. In stark contrast, Democrats focused their inquiries on the DOJ's alleged targeting of political adversaries and its management of files linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., delivered a scathing opening statement, condemning the DOJ's approach to the Epstein files and emphasizing the need for transparency. He noted the presence of survivors in the room, arguing that redactions in the documents seemed to favor powerful individuals rather than protecting victims. "You're not showing a lot of interest in the victims, Madam Attorney General," Raskin asserted, referencing both Epstein's crimes and recent incidents of violence against citizens in Minneapolis. "That will be your legacy unless you act quickly to change course," he warned.
Bondi, who previously served as Florida's attorney general, countered by highlighting the release of millions of documents and expressing her commitment to advocating for survivors. Among Republicans, Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., stood out by challenging Bondi on the Epstein issue. "What a difference a year makes," said committee chairman Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio. "The DOJ has returned to its core missions—upholding the rule of law."
Bondi claims to have made "tremendous progress" in addressing what she describes as the department's previous weaponization against Trump and conservatives. However, Biden-era officials refute these claims, pointing to ongoing prosecutions of Democratic figures as evidence against politicization.
Historically, the Justice Department has maintained a degree of independence from political influence, particularly in investigations. Critics argue that under Bondi's leadership, this independence has eroded, facilitating Trump's agenda against perceived enemies.
Raskin accused Bondi of transforming the DOJ into an instrument for Trump's vendettas: "You've turned the people's Department of Justice into Trump's instrument of revenge," he charged. The hearing also touched on investigations into various individuals seen as obstacles to Trump's agenda, including Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell and former intelligence officials.
