Washington — An 18-year-old male was taken into custody by U.S. Capitol Police on Tuesday after he was spotted sprinting toward the Capitol while armed with a shotgun, according to the police chief.

U.S. Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan detailed the incident, stating that the suspect parked a white Mercedes SUV near the Capitol shortly after noon. He exited the vehicle brandishing a shotgun and proceeded to run toward the West Front of the Capitol, which faces the National Mall.

“This individual was confronted by United States Capitol Police officers who ordered him to drop the weapon, and he complied,” Sullivan explained during a press briefing. “He placed the shotgun on the ground and then laid down, allowing officers to take him into custody.”

The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, was reportedly wearing a tactical vest and gloves. Sullivan confirmed that the shotgun was loaded and that the individual had additional ammunition. Officers also discovered a Kevlar helmet and a gas mask inside his vehicle.

According to Sullivan, this individual was not previously known to Capitol Police. He described the suspect as an 18-year-old who does not reside locally. The vehicle he used was not registered in his name, and he has multiple addresses, prompting authorities to investigate his origins.

When questioned about the suspect's intentions, Sullivan stated that there is currently no known motive, emphasizing that the investigation remains active.

Earlier in the day, U.S. Capitol Police confirmed that the suspect was in custody and indicated that there were no other suspects or ongoing threats related to this incident.

Sullivan praised the officers involved in the apprehension, highlighting their vigilance. “Who knows what could have transpired if we hadn’t had officers here standing guard as they do every single day,” he remarked.
