Texas Figure Skating Coach Arrested for Alleged Sexual Assault of Minors
Authorities in north Texas have taken a figure skating coach into custody, alleging he sexually assaulted two of his athletes, one of whom is a minor. Benjamin Shroats, 47, was arrested at his residence in Allen on February 17.
The arrest followed a three-day investigation prompted by claims of sexual abuse. Investigators revealed that one of the victims was under 18 at the time of the alleged incidents.
Shroats faces serious charges: one count of indecency with a child involving sexual contact and one count of sexual assault. He is currently being held on a bond totaling $200,000. As of February 19, no plea information has been disclosed.
Police are urging any additional victims to come forward and report their experiences by contacting them at (214) 509-4200. The investigation into Shroats' actions is ongoing.

Shroats has been a prominent figure in Texas' skating community, having competed as a pairs skater and coached in Collin County for over ten years. Notably, he previously worked with American figure skater Amber Glenn, who is now preparing for the 2026 Olympics.
The President of the Dallas Figure Skating Club released a statement addressing the situation, emphasizing their commitment to the safety and welfare of children involved in the sport. “We take concerns involving our members and the adult coaches who train them very seriously,” the statement read.
It was also clarified that the Dallas Figure Skating Club does not employ or supervise coaches; instead, all coaching arrangements are made independently between families and coaches. The club does not manage any ice rinks either.
“We respect the investigative process and trust that the Allen Police Department is conducting a thorough investigation,” the statement continued. “If you have information that may be relevant, or if you have concerns about a child who may have been in contact with this coach, please contact the Allen Police Department directly for guidance and assistance.”
In related news, Glenn recently competed in the 2026 Winter Olympics, where she placed 13th in the women’s figure skating short program on February 17. She shared her experience on social media, expressing her feelings about her performance.
