Texas Figure Skating Coach Arrested on Child Sexual Assault Charges

Feb 19 2026

Authorities in north Texas have taken a significant step in addressing allegations of sexual misconduct, arresting a figure skating coach accused of sexually assaulting two of his athletes, one of whom is a minor.

Benjamin Shroats, 47, was apprehended at his residence in Allen on February 17, following a swift three-day investigation into the claims against him.

According to police reports, the investigation revealed that Shroats had allegedly engaged in sexual abuse with two athletes he was coaching, including one who was under 18 at the time of the incidents.

Shroats now faces serious charges: one count of indecency with a child involving sexual contact and another count of sexual assault. He remains in custody with a bond set at $200,000. As of February 19, no plea information has been disclosed.

The police department has urged any additional victims to come forward, providing a contact number for those who may have relevant information: (214) 509-4200.

Shroats is a recognized figure within Texas' skating community, having previously competed as a pairs skater and coached for over ten years in Collin County. His coaching history includes working with American figure skater Amber Glenn, who is now preparing for the 2026 Olympics.

The President of the Dallas Figure Skating Club addressed the situation, emphasizing their commitment to the safety of children involved in the sport. “We take concerns involving our members and the adult coaches who train them very seriously,” the statement read. “The safety and welfare of children is our top priority.”

Furthermore, the club clarified its role, stating that it does not employ or supervise coaches directly. Coaches operate independently, arranging lessons directly with families. The club also expressed confidence in the thoroughness of the ongoing investigation by the Allen Police Department.

In a related note, Glenn recently competed in the Winter Olympics but faced challenges during her performance, finishing 13th in the women's figure skating short program on February 17.

She shared her experience on social media, reflecting on her performance with humor despite the disappointment. “Landing my highest scoring 3Axel,” she posted alongside a video clip, later commenting on her struggles during the event.
