Trump-Backed Senator Backs His Democratic Spouse in Nebraska: ‘My Sole Liberal Choice’

Feb 20 2026

Republican Senator Pete Ricketts, known for his alignment with Trump, has thrown his support behind his wife, Susanne Shore, as she vies for a position on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents. Ricketts declared her his “one Democrat exception” for the upcoming election cycle.

“I typically cast my ballot for Republicans, but Susanne will be my one Democrat exception in 2026!” Ricketts stated, as reported by local sources.

Shore aims to secure a seat on the board, which plays a crucial role in shaping policies and overseeing public higher education institutions. Her goal is to assist in steering the university through a challenging period and ensuring accessibility for all students.

Having served as Nebraska's governor from 2015 to 2023, Ricketts emphasized Shore’s “deep love” for Nebraska and her potential to be “an outstanding voice” within the university system.

Despite their differing political ideologies, Ricketts and Shore have maintained a strong partnership over their 28 years of marriage. They have historically supported opposing political parties and candidates, even during Ricketts' tenure as governor. Yet, they navigate the polarized political landscape together.

“We engage in plenty of discussions, but they’re always respectful. We listen as much as we talk,” Shore remarked, noting Ricketts’ unwavering support for her political aspirations.

Shore enters a competitive race against at least four other Democratic candidates aiming to fill the seat vacated by Elizabeth O’Connor, who resigned after facing felony charges related to a DUI incident that resulted in serious injuries to another individual.

This resignation coincided with the departure of the university’s chancellor, Rodney Bennett, who stepped down following a no-confidence vote amid criticism over budget cuts.

Shore brings experience from her time as Nebraska’s first lady and her role at the University of South Dakota’s Dean of Residential Life, which she believes equips her with valuable insights into college governance.

“I’ll walk into any room with legitimacy and trust,” Shore asserted confidently.

The primary election for the University of Nebraska’s Board of Regents is scheduled for May 12. As Shore embarks on her political journey, Ricketts is also focused on his re-election efforts.

Ricketts was appointed to the Senate in 2022 after Ben Sasse's resignation and subsequently won a special election in 2024 by a significant margin against his Democratic opponent.

Trump has endorsed Ricketts for the upcoming midterms, further solidifying his position within the party.
