Trump's Mass Deportation Advocate Exits DHS Amid Controversy

Feb 18 2026

Tricia McLaughlin, a leading voice for the Department of Homeland Security and a staunch supporter of President Trump's mass deportation initiatives, is departing from her role next week. This decision comes in the wake of escalating public outrage following the fatal shootings of two individuals by federal agents in Minnesota.

Sources indicate that McLaughlin informed her colleagues of her plans on Tuesday, with Politico first breaking the news. Her tenure has been marked by vigorous defense of the administration's controversial actions, particularly after the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

Initially intending to leave her post in December, McLaughlin postponed her exit to assist the administration during this tumultuous period. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem confirmed her departure, praising McLaughlin for her “exceptional dedication, tenacity, and professionalism.”

“She has played an instrumental role in advancing our mission to secure the homeland and keep Americans safe,” Noem stated. “While we are sad to see her leave, we are grateful for her service and wish Tricia nothing but success.”

In her farewell statement, McLaughlin expressed gratitude towards President Trump, Secretary Noem, and the American populace for the opportunity to serve. She also highlighted her pride in her team’s accomplishments.

Lauren Bis, currently one of McLaughlin’s deputies, will step into the role of assistant secretary for public affairs. Bis is known for her “fact-checking” videos on social media aimed at countering what the administration labels as misinformation from news outlets.

Katie Zacharia, a commentator from Fox News whom McLaughlin regards as a “dynamic and effective voice in media,” will take on the role of Homeland Security spokeswoman and deputy assistant secretary.

McLaughlin’s exit occurs at a precarious time for the administration, which is grappling with declining public support for its aggressive immigration policies aimed at swiftly arresting and deporting large numbers of individuals.

The 31-year-old Ohio native previously worked as a communications aide for Vivek Ramaswamy during his presidential campaign and held positions under Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and at the State Department during Trump’s first term.

Her rise within the agency has positioned her as a combative spokesperson for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), addressing high-profile arrests, deportations, and allegations of abusive conditions in detention centers.

McLaughlin’s unwavering defense of DHS actions has drawn criticism from Democratic opponents while earning accolades from Trump. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker labeled her a “pathological liar” amid rising tensions over federal enforcement actions in his state.

Critics have frequently accused McLaughlin of disseminating false information regarding immigrants. Democratic Representative Dan Goldman once urged her to “go back to doing what she does best: gaslighting the American people.”

“Media is so much of the battle on the immigration issue,” McLaughlin remarked last month. “So much of the debate is a PR war.”

Following Pretti’s death, McLaughlin claimed that he had “violently resisted” arrest and was planning to inflict “maximum damage” on law enforcement. However, top immigration officials later testified that these claims did not originate from them.

Her departure coincides with a criminal investigation by the Department of Justice into whether ICE agents provided false testimony regarding an incident involving two Venezuelan men in Minnesota.

McLaughlin is not the only high-ranking DHS official to exit recently; ICE deputy director Madison Sheahan also resigned last month to pursue a congressional seat in Ohio.

In a previous interview with The Cincinnati Enquirer, McLaughlin hinted at potential future political aspirations, stating she “wouldn’t rule anything out” regarding running for office. “I love Cincinnati. It’s my home,” she added, reflecting on her deep ties to the community.
