Trump Unveils Ambitious 250-Foot Victory Arch Design for Washington DC
The Trump administration has released striking new designs for a proposed 250-foot victory arch, envisioned to dominate the Washington D.C. skyline.
Crafted by Harrison Design, the renderings depict a grand white structure along the Potomac River, reminiscent of Paris's Arc de Triomphe. The arch features ornate gilding, four lion statues, a majestic winged figure atop, and the phrase “One Nation Under God” prominently displayed on its front.
Planned for Memorial Circle, a key roundabout adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery and directly across from the Lincoln Memorial, the arch is positioned to be a significant landmark.
On Friday, the Interior Department submitted these designs to the Commission on Fine Arts, a federal body that advises on architectural matters. The commission is set to review the proposal next week.
This marks the first official submission of plans for the arch, which President Trump has discussed with enthusiasm for several months.
“I’d like it to be the biggest one of all,” Trump stated in January. “We’re the biggest, most powerful nation.”
When asked previously about the arch's purpose, he remarked, “Me. Going to be beautiful.”
Intended as a tribute for America's 250th anniversary, the proposed arch has sparked debate due to its massive scale. At 250 feet tall, it would surpass both the White House and Lincoln Memorial in height.
Art critic Catesby Leigh expressed concerns, stating, “I don’t think an arch that large belongs there.” Other experts echoed this sentiment, warning that its size could overshadow nearby monuments.
Air safety issues have also been raised, as the arch's location is near flight paths used by aircraft approaching from the north. This area was the site of a tragic air collision in January 2025.
Despite the controversy, some local residents have shown support for the project. “It’s a good idea and it’s a good spot for it right in that grass,” said one D.C. resident. “It’s a good line for a view there.”
A potential hurdle lies in existing laws that protect certain areas of the city, requiring congressional approval for new monuments. Memorial Circle falls within these protected zones.
Consequently, Public Citizen, a nonprofit advocacy group, is working to halt the project until Congress can review it. This legal challenge gained traction in March when several Democratic lawmakers joined in support.
Funding for the project remains uncertain. The Trump administration previously indicated that leftover donations from his White House ballroom project would finance the arch. However, recent budget proposals suggest taxpayer money may be involved.
This towering arch is part of Trump's broader vision to reshape Washington D.C. in his likeness.
Alongside the ballroom construction, he has made changes such as renovating the Rose Garden, gilding the Oval Office, installing tall flagpoles on the White House lawn, and renaming the Kennedy Center after himself.
