WNBA Star Sophie Cunningham Slams Los Angeles: ‘They All Seem Alike’

Indiana Fever's Sophie Cunningham has stirred the pot once again, this time targeting Los Angeles in a recent TikTok video during her California trip.

“I’m not being judgmental,” the 29-year-old athlete stated, “but I don’t think I’m an LA girl at all. It’s just strange. People don’t dance. They don’t even say ‘Hi.’ They lack personality. They all look the same. Isn’t that odd?” This candid commentary was shared on February 14, and it quickly caught the attention of her followers.

Continuing her critique, Cunningham remarked, “All these personalities you see on Instagram and TikTok, those influencers found their space online, but if you can’t engage with people face-to-face... isn’t that weird? I know I’m quirky, but it seems like everyone is so accustomed to talking into their phones.”

“Engage with someone in person,” she urged. “And be yourself. Ugh.”

The response to her remarks was a mixed bag. One fan from San Diego chimed in, “You’re spot on. Different culture here.” Cunningham replied with surprise, “Like are you for real?”

“Very much for real,” the follower responded, elaborating on the cultural differences and high costs of living in LA, describing it as “a little plastic.”

However, another user suggested that Cunningham should avoid hanging out with all-stars and influencers, implying that her experiences didn’t represent the city as a whole.

Last summer, Cunningham faced backlash after commenting on the WNBA's expansion to Detroit and Cleveland, questioning players' excitement about those cities. After some pushback, she clarified her stance, acknowledging the historical significance of both cities in the league's development.

“What I meant was about the off-court lifestyle,” she explained. “I appreciate what they’ve done for our sport’s history.”

Cunningham also addressed a common critique regarding new WNBA franchises being located in NBA markets, suggesting that teams outside these areas could be beneficial. “It’d be fun to have teams outside the NBA market,” she said. “I think people misunderstood my comments. I would never disparage middle-class workers; that’s my background. I’m from Missouri. I just think Broadway sounds exciting.”
