Chiefs Stars Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce Face Trademark Lawsuit Over Restaurant Name

Feb 23 2026

A sneaker company or a restaurant? The lines are blurring in a legal dispute involving Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.

The duo, alongside their business partner Noble 33, is facing a lawsuit for trademark infringement related to their steakhouse, 1587 Prime. The complaint, filed by 1587 Sneakers, claims that the restaurant's name infringes on their trademark.

According to reports, 1587 Sneakers began selling its products in April 2023, prior to the opening of 1587 Prime. However, the sneaker company did not file for the "1587" trademark until October 2025, and that application remains under review by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

In contrast, Mahomes and Kelce submitted their trademark application in December 2023. Their restaurant name draws inspiration from their jersey numbers—15 for Mahomes and 87 for Kelce.

Interestingly, the trademark applications differ in classification; the sneaker company’s application falls under clothing, while the restaurant’s is categorized under bars and restaurants. “It’s a tough case for the sneaker company,” remarked trademark attorney Josh Gerben, who does not represent either party. “Trademarks can coexist in different industries... Are consumers likely to be confused in thinking they are affiliated with one another?”

Additionally, the sneaker company alleges apparel infringement due to the restaurant selling clothing alongside food. They claim numerous customers have mistakenly contacted them, believing there is a connection between 1587 Sneakers and 1587 Prime.

“From the onset, we have communicated a sincere belief that there is room for mutual respect and understanding,” stated Adam King, co-founder of 1587 Sneakers. “That belief has not changed, and we continue to hope to resolve this matter amicably.”

In 2024, 1587 Sneakers appeared on the television show “Shark Tank,” where entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to investors but did not secure any funding.

As the offseason unfolds, Mahomes and Kelce are navigating personal challenges following a disappointing season for the Chiefs, who finished with a 6-11 record and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014.

Mahomes is focused on recovery from an ACL tear sustained in December, while Kelce is addressing speculation surrounding his potential retirement. “Every season ends for me, I just put my feet up and I be a human,” Kelce shared on his “New Heights” podcast. “I do enjoy playing football... it makes you just feel like a mangy animal that’s out here just finding a way to survive.”
