Eight Young Lives Lost in Louisiana Family Shooting

Apr 19 2026

SHREVEPORT, La. — In a harrowing early morning incident, a father shot and killed eight children, seven of whom were his own, in a Shreveport neighborhood, marking one of the most devastating mass shootings in recent memory.

Among the injured were two women, including the children's mother, who sustained critical injuries. The ages of the deceased children ranged from just 3 to 11 years old, according to police spokesperson Chris Bordelon.

The shooter, identified as 31-year-old Shamar Elkins, died following a police chase that ended with officers firing upon him. While the motive remains unclear, Bordelon emphasized that detectives believe the shooting stemmed from domestic issues.

This incident stands as the deadliest mass shooting in the U.S. in over two years. “I just don’t know what to say; my heart is just taken aback,” expressed Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith. “I cannot begin to imagine how such an event could occur.”

Elkins had previous encounters with law enforcement, having been arrested in a firearms case back in 2019. However, there were no known prior domestic violence reports against him.

The violence erupted before dawn when Elkins first shot a woman at one residence before moving to another location where the majority of the tragedy unfolded. Seven children were found dead inside the second house, while one child was discovered on the roof, presumably attempting to escape. Another child who jumped from the roof is expected to survive after being hospitalized.

State Representative Tammy Phelps recounted that some children attempted to flee through a back door. “I can’t even imagine what the police officers and first responders faced when they arrived,” she remarked during a press briefing.

The victims included three boys and five girls, as confirmed by the Caddo Parish Coroner’s office. Elkins and his wife were reportedly in the process of separating and were scheduled for a court appearance the following day. Crystal Brown, a cousin of one of the injured women, noted that arguments over their separation had escalated prior to the shooting.

“He murdered his children,” Brown stated emphatically. “He shot his wife.” Elkins had four children with his wife and three with another woman who also lived nearby and was shot during the incident.

Describing the children as “happy kids, very friendly, very sweet,” Brown lamented their loss. Liza Demming, a neighbor, reported seeing Elkins fleeing the scene on her security camera just moments after hearing gunfire.

Demming later discovered a covered body on the roof of the home where most of the victims were shot. “He looks like the dad that comes over here,” she said, recalling that he had been seen with the children just days prior.

Pastor Marty T. Johnson Sr., whose property was involved in the shootings, mentioned that a tenant had rented it to Elkins’ family but he had no direct interactions with them.

The Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office has withheld the names of the victims pending identification. “What began as a domestic dispute has ended in irreversible harm,” stated the district attorney’s office.

This incident marks the deadliest mass shooting since January 2024 when eight individuals were killed in a Chicago suburb, according to data compiled by various news organizations.

At a press conference outside one of the crime scenes, officials expressed disbelief and requested patience and prayers from the community as they navigated multiple crime scenes. “This is a tragic situation — maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had,” remarked Tom Arceneaux, mayor of Shreveport.

Louisiana State Police have joined Shreveport police in investigating the incident. They confirmed that no officers were injured during the shooting or subsequent pursuit.

State police are urging anyone with photos, videos, or information related to the case to come forward. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed their heartbreak over the tragedy and commended law enforcement for their swift response.

“We’re holding the victims, their families and loved ones, and our Shreveport community close in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time,” Johnson stated.
