Frankie Muniz Wrecks NASCAR Truck Just Hours After ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ Spinoff Launches

Frankie Muniz, known for his role in the beloved sitcom “Malcolm in the Middle,” found himself in a precarious situation on Friday, April 11, when he crashed his truck during the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Despite the dramatic incident, reports indicate that the 40-year-old actor emerged without serious injuries, although he was unable to complete the race.

“I actually thought we were running pretty good. I felt pretty quick,” Muniz shared with Fox Sports’ Bob Pockrass post-race. “We were in the lucky dog position, so I was just trying to do some good lap times. I think there was like 10 to go on the stage.”

Coincidentally, Muniz’s new series, “Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair,” debuted on the same day, featuring him reprising his iconic character alongside Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek in a four-episode miniseries.

Racing in a “Malcolm in the Middle”-themed F-150, Muniz collided with fellow drivers Tyler Reif and Timmy Hill on Turn 3 of the track.

“I think [Reif] maybe got impatient, I don’t know,” Muniz recounted. “He was yelling at me in there, saying I’m a lapper, like I shouldn’t be racing. I’m in the lucky dog position. I’m fighting. I belong on that racetrack just as much as he does, just as much as the leaders do.”

He added, “I’m not going to back down on that. I haven’t seen a replay, but based on what I felt, I went to the middle of the track. I didn’t track all the way out to show that I was going to go back to the bottom.”

As they entered the turn, Reif appeared to clip Muniz’s truck while attempting to pass, resulting in both vehicles crashing into the wall. Hill, trailing closely behind Reif, also became entangled in the wreck.

Muniz’s passion for racing dates back to his childhood. He is notably one of the last individuals to have spoken with NASCAR icon Dale Earnhardt before his tragic death in 2001.

“He was extremely friendly to me,” Muniz recalled in a February 2026 FS1 documentary titled We’ve Lost Dale Earnhardt: 25 Years Later. “And I remember he said, ‘I have to say thank you to you… because your show has brought me and my daughter closer together.’ He’s like, ‘It’s something that we turn on Sunday nights and we watch together.’”

At that time, “Malcolm in the Middle” was enjoying its peak popularity.

Muniz transitioned into racing in 2004 after stepping back from Hollywood, making his professional debut in 2006.

In 2024, he announced plans to race full-time during the 2025 NASCAR season. “This is something that I’ve been working [toward] for literally 20 years when I did my first race,” Muniz expressed at that time. “That feeling of crossing the finish line first in that pro-celebrity race was an incredible, incredible feeling and I’ve been chasing that.”
