GOP Figures Under Fire for Spreading Fake AI Image of Rescued Airman

Apr 06 2026

Republican leaders are facing intense scrutiny after they shared an AI-generated image purporting to show an American airman rescued from enemy territory in Iran.

On Friday, a U.S. F-15 jet was downed over Iranian soil, prompting a significant search-and-rescue mission for the two crew members who ejected from the aircraft.

While one pilot was swiftly recovered, the second crew member found himself hiding on a remote mountainside for nearly 48 hours before U.S. special forces successfully evacuated him on Sunday, as noted by President Trump in a post on Truth Social.

Shortly after the president's announcement, a pro-Trump account on X shared an image depicting a smiling man in military attire, proudly holding an American flag, flanked by fellow troops.

The post claimed, “Here is the photo of the honorable Colonel being rescued yesterday. God bless him— our soldiers are ALL doing God’s work!”

This image garnered over five million views and was disseminated by several high-profile GOP figures, including Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Attorney General Ken Paxton, and New York Representative Mike Lawler, according to reports.

“This is so awesome,” Abbott commented, while Lawler added, “God Bless America!”

Paxton, who is campaigning for a Senate seat in Texas, remarked, “Shot down on Good Friday… rescued on Easter morning. God is sending a message to our enemies!”

However, it soon became apparent that the image was AI-generated, as indicated by community notes and various online detection tools confirming its inauthenticity. The identities of the rescued aviators remain undisclosed.

Despite deleting their posts, the backlash continued unabated across social media platforms.

“Maybe when you are a member of Congress, you should try to make sure you aren’t posting AI slop from a BS right-wing influencer,” Ron Filipkowski, editor-in-chief of MeidasTouch, remarked while sharing a screenshot of Lawler’s post.

“This kind of stuff is bleak,” commented Billy Binion, a reporter for Reason magazine, regarding Abbott’s now-deleted post. “I get that we’re in a new era, but we desperately need a new crash course in media literacy or just a reminder to be remotely discerning. The governor of Texas should not be sharing an obviously fake photo from a slop account.”

This viral AI image surfaced five weeks into the ongoing U.S. conflict with Iran, which has escalated violence across large regions of the Middle East, resulting in thousands of casualties.

Recent polls indicate that a significant majority of Americans oppose the ongoing conflict.
