Johnson Decries Democrats' Decision to Skip Trump's State of the Union
House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed strong disapproval regarding the decision of some Democrats to boycott President Trump's State of the Union address scheduled for Tuesday, labeling the move as "detestable." He emphasized, "we're all for America," underscoring a call for unity.
In an exclusive interview with a prominent news anchor, Johnson stated, "I think it's detestable that members would boycott the speech." He highlighted the importance of respecting the office of the presidency, regardless of party affiliation. "We've never done that. It doesn't matter if there's a Democrat president; you go and respect the office, you respect the decorum, the institution, the tradition of having had this speech made," he added.
Johnson lamented that it is "sad" some Democrats are opting out of this significant event. His comments come in light of a growing number of Democratic lawmakers who have announced their intention to skip the annual address. This decision follows House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries' remarks suggesting that his caucus could either "attend with silent defiance or to not attend, and send a message to Donald Trump in that fashion."
Instead of attending the official address, several Democrats plan to participate in an alternative event dubbed the "People's State of the Union," which will occur simultaneously at the National Mall. Notable attendees include Senators Ed Markey, Jeff Merkley, Chris Murphy, Tina Smith, and Chris Van Hollen, along with Representatives Pramila Jayapal, Becca Balint, and Greg Casar. Others have simply chosen to skip the address altogether.
Recent years have seen numerous disruptions during these addresses from both sides of the aisle. In 2024, former GOP Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene infamously shouted "liar" at former President Joe Biden. Johnson reiterated his commitment to maintaining decorum, stating, "At every turn, I have encouraged my colleagues to maintain decorum and the dignity of the office."
During a recent Republican conference meeting, Johnson urged his colleagues to embody the spirit of teamwork exemplified by the U.S. hockey teams that won gold medals in Milan. "We play for one team," he remarked. "We're all for America."
On Tuesday, Johnson confirmed that members of the men's hockey team will be present at the speech, noting that President Trump had invited them following their victory.
