Kai Trump’s Latest Video Sparks Outrage, Drawing Comparisons to Marie Antoinette
“Let them eat $21 smoothies,” critics quipped as Kai Trump, the 18-year-old granddaughter of former President Donald Trump, shared her latest YouTube venture.

On Sunday, she announced on X that her new video, “I Brought My Secret Service to Erewhon,” was live. The nearly 19-minute clip showcases her shopping at Erewhon, a high-end grocery store in Los Angeles, where she casually picks up a mason jar of dates priced at $17, Ashwagandha capsules for $23, and a viral Hailey Bieber smoothie costing $21.

While she humorously critiques the store's wellness products, her astonishment at a $165 hoodie feels disingenuous, especially since she marketed her own sweatshirt for $130 last year. “I’m about to go bankrupt,” she jokes at checkout, where her sparse basket totals $233.
Post-shopping, the video captures her waiting for a Secret Service motorcade to whisk her away to her hotel. Once there, she reviews her purchases. The dates? “Expired,” she claims. The Bieber smoothie? “Really, really good!” After sampling store-bought sushi, she finds it so unpalatable that she rushes to the bathroom to spit it out, discarding nearly the entire tray. She enjoys a $37 hot plate but dismisses most of it as “mid.”
“I low-key feel I can make this at home for under $10,” she remarks after tasting the meal, which is ironic given that four short ribs at Kroger retail for about $13.
Despite reportedly earning over $1 million last year from golf endorsements, many questioned why she required a Secret Service detail for such frivolous activities. Critics on X labeled the video “tone deaf,” particularly in light of rising prices affecting everyday Americans.
“Girl read the room,” one user commented. “People can’t afford to put gas in their tank.” The backlash intensified as viewers drew parallels between her and Marie Antoinette.
“It genuinely sometimes feels like they are trying to usher in a French revolution,” podcaster Matt Bernstein tweeted. Others referenced more recent events, including her grandfather’s controversial policies regarding Iran.
“She’s 18. Enlist,” another user suggested, highlighting a stark contrast between her privileged lifestyle and the realities faced by many.
