March Intelligence Brief Exposed Iran's Ongoing Menace to U.S. Amid White House's Risk Minimization

Apr 09 2026

On April 7, a law enforcement intelligence report revealed that the FBI alerted state and local authorities about an increased threat from Iran’s government targeting the United States. This warning came even as the White House attempted to downplay the risk of an imminent attack.

The March 20 report, a collaboration between the FBI and various federal intelligence agencies, characterized the Iranian government as a “persistent threat” to U.S. military and government personnel, Jewish and Israeli institutions, and Iranian dissidents residing in the country. However, it also noted that no broad threats to the general American public had been identified by the FBI or the National Counterterrorism Center.

President Trump has publicly dismissed concerns regarding potential Iranian attacks on U.S. soil, stating on March 11, “No, I’m not,” when questioned about his worries over such threats. His rhetoric intensified recently, claiming that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran did not comply with his demands, although he later postponed any military action by two weeks.

This intelligence report, titled “Public Safety Awareness Report,” surfaced shortly after reports indicated that the White House had blocked the release of a similar intelligence product. The administration justified this decision by asserting the need for thorough vetting of information prior to public dissemination.

“The entire Trump administration is working together to protect the homeland and the American people – as they always do,” stated White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson. She criticized media outlets for potentially inciting fear through reports on isolated law enforcement memorandums lacking broader context.

Requests for comments from the FBI and NCTC went unanswered. Meanwhile, Ali Karimi Magham, a spokesperson for Iran’s mission to the United Nations, refrained from commenting on the report.

Public sentiment regarding U.S. military involvement in conflicts remains largely negative; a recent poll indicated that two-thirds of Americans believe the U.S. should withdraw quickly from its engagements, making perceptions of threats particularly significant.

The March 20 FBI report was obtained through open records requests by Property of the People, a nonprofit focused on national security transparency, and subsequently shared with various news outlets.

It underscored “the potential for elevated physical threats” from Iranian government actions following the onset of recent conflicts. The report warned that violent extremists with diverse ideological motivations might exploit this situation as justification for violence against U.S. interests.

In recent years, Iranian security services have been implicated in plots to kidnap or kill Americans. While most of these schemes have involved firearms, other methods have included stabbings, vehicle rammings, bombings, poisoning, strangling, suffocation, and arson.

The report indicated that Tehran often employs operatives who possess legal status or access to the U.S. It also noted that Iranian authorities have monitored social media platforms, livestreams, and mapping applications to select targets and evaluate security measures. Additionally, hacking tactics such as phishing emails have been utilized.

Furthermore, the Iranian government has attempted to lure victims to neighboring countries for potential kidnappings and executions. The report concluded with a call for law enforcement officials to remain vigilant regarding possible threats and to communicate any concerning information with federal authorities.
