In a stunning display of frustration, Daniil Medvedev obliterated his racket after a crushing defeat to Matteo Berrettini at the Monte Carlo Masters.
The 30-year-old Russian athlete faced an unprecedented loss on April 8, failing to secure a single game in a match that lasted just 49 minutes, ending with a score of 6-0, 6-0.
Video footage circulating on social media captured Medvedev smashing his racket six times against the clay court, each strike met with cheers from the audience. The racket bent and twisted under the force of his anger, ultimately ending up in two pieces.
After his outburst, Medvedev discarded the wreckage into a trash can, a fitting end to a match that left him visibly shaken. His disdain for clay courts is well-documented; he has previously referred to them as "a surface for losers" and likened playing on them to being "like a dog in the dirt."
Berrettini, who entered the match as a wildcard, is ranked 80 spots lower than Medvedev, making the loss even more surprising.
This incident isn't Medvedev's first emotional eruption on the court. Fans may recall his explosive reaction during the 2025 US Open when he confronted an umpire after a photographer disrupted play. His anger peaked when French player Benjamin Bonzi was granted a second serve due to the interruption, prompting Medvedev to challenge the umpire's authority.
As the match dragged on until 1 a.m., Medvedev's frustration culminated in another racket-smashing episode on a bench post-match, leaving it in ruins. His wife, Daria Medvedeva, was seen exiting the arena during this tumultuous moment.
While it remains unclear if she attended the Monte Carlo event, their relationship has deep roots; they met as teenagers in competitive tennis. A simple Instagram message in 2014 led to their exchange of phone numbers and eventually marriage in September 2018.
The couple welcomed their first child, Alisa, in 2022 and kept their second pregnancy private until announcing the birth of their second child in January 2025. Medvedev has previously expressed how integral Daria is to his life and career, stating in 2019, "She's one of the most important members of my team."
