Sabrina Carpenter found herself in hot water after a comment made during her Coachella performance sparked significant backlash online.
While captivating the audience at the festival in Indio, California, the 26-year-old singer paused mid-set, seemingly perplexed by a noise emanating from the crowd. “I think I heard someone yodel,” she remarked while playing the keyboard, before adding, “Is that what you’re doing? I don’t like it.”

A fan quickly responded, explaining that the sound was “part of my culture” and “a call for celebration.” However, Carpenter appeared unconvinced, retorting, “That’s your culture, yodelling? Is this Burning Man? What’s going on? This is weird.” The exchange rapidly gained traction on social media, with many fans labeling her comments as “rude,” “ignorant,” and “mean.”
In the wake of the uproar, Carpenter took to social media to clarify her intentions. Quoting a disappointed fan's post, she expressed, “My apologies I didn’t see this person with my eyes and couldn’t hear clearly. My reaction was pure confusion, sarcasm and not ill intended. Could have handled it better! Now I know what a Zaghrouta is! I welcome all cheers and yodels from here on out.”
Despite the controversy, Carpenter continued her performance, delivering a series of hits including “Taste,” “Please Please Please,” and “We Almost Broke Up Again Last Night.” Earlier in her set, she had shared her excitement about headlining one of the world’s most prestigious music festivals. “I can’t believe I’m headlining Coachella! I mean, I can a little bit, but it’s nicer to say that, right?” she told the audience.

Online reactions remained divided following the incident. Some fans expressed disappointment, stating that the comment marred an otherwise stellar show. “I was actually enjoying the show till this comment. It was really rude,” one viewer lamented.
Another chimed in, “She even said, ‘IT’S WEIRD.’ A total lack of respect.” Conversely, several supporters defended Carpenter, suggesting that her inability to hear properly from the stage contributed to the misunderstanding. “She clearly could not hear the girl speaking. You have to remember she’s all the way up on stage,” one fan argued.

This awkward moment has not overshadowed what is undeniably a significant milestone for Carpenter, who is now headlining one of the most renowned music festivals globally. The Coachella performance represents a pivotal moment in her career, with the artist previously hinting that it would be “the most ambitious show I’ve ever done.”
