Trump Greenlights Emergency Aid for D.C. Amid Potomac Sewage Crisis

Feb 22 2026

Emergency assistance has been sanctioned by President Donald Trump for Washington, D.C., in response to a catastrophic sewage leak that released over 250 million gallons of untreated waste into the Potomac River.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) confirmed the approval on Saturday, enabling the agency to deploy essential equipment and resources to manage the aftermath of the January 19 incident, which was triggered by a ruptured pipeline.

On Wednesday, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser formally requested federal intervention and declared a state of emergency.

Trump's endorsement of the disaster relief request followed his public criticism of local Democratic leaders' management of the crisis, particularly targeting Maryland's Democratic Governor Wes Moore.

In a series of social media posts, he asserted that local officials had failed to seek emergency assistance promptly, prompting his decision to intervene.

Despite Trump's remarks, federal agencies were already engaged in assessing the situation and repairing the damage through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The 72-inch (183 cm) Potomac Interceptor pipeline burst on January 19, resulting in a staggering 250 million gallons of raw sewage entering the river within just five days.

While efforts to control the leak are progressing, complete repairs may take several months. DC Water, in collaboration with the EPA, is actively working to fix the pipeline and monitor the environmental impact.

Officials have reassured residents that drinking water remains safe; however, they advise caution for those engaging in recreational activities on the Potomac River, urging them to avoid direct contact with the water.
