U.S. Women's Hockey Team Responds to Trump's Tactless Remark

“Distasteful and unfortunate.” Those were the words of Hilary Knight, a key player on the U.S. women's Olympic hockey team, as she addressed President Donald Trump's offhand joke regarding their gold medal victory. Speaking at the Seattle Space Needle, Knight emphasized that such remarks should not overshadow the historic achievements of American women in sports, particularly at the Milan Cortina Games.

Alongside fellow Olympians Alex Carpenter, Hannah Bilka, and Cayla Barnes, Knight expressed her disappointment. “The way women are represented is crucial,” she stated, highlighting the need for recognition of their accomplishments. “It’s a great teaching point.”

Trump's comments came after the U.S. men's team secured gold against Canada in a thrilling overtime match. During a postgame call, he invited the men’s team to the White House, quipping about needing to include the women’s team to avoid potential impeachment. This lighthearted jab, however, did not sit well with Knight.

While the men’s team celebrated at the White House, enjoying fast food fare, many women players were returning to their respective clubs. USA Hockey acknowledged logistical challenges that prevented the women from attending, citing a snowstorm that altered their travel plans.

Despite this, Trump later assured that the women would be welcomed at the White House. “We look forward to hosting them after their tremendous victory,” a White House official confirmed.

Some players had intended to stay in New York for promotional events, including a bell-ringing ceremony at the Stock Exchange, but those plans were scrapped due to flight issues. Knight lamented how a video capturing players laughing at Trump’s comments misrepresented the camaraderie between the men’s and women’s teams.

“The men’s and women’s teams achieved this together,” Knight remarked. “It’s something we’re extremely proud of.” She stressed that the women’s hard work should not be overshadowed by external distractions.

Kelly Pannek, a forward on the women’s team, acknowledged the mixed feelings surrounding the video but noted the special bond formed with the men’s team after their historic win. “There’s mutual respect and support,” she affirmed.

Goaltender Jeremy Swayman voiced his belief that the men should have reacted differently to Trump’s remarks. “To share that gold medal with them is something we’re forever grateful for,” he said, emphasizing unity among players.

Jack Hughes, who scored the decisive goal for the U.S., echoed similar sentiments. “We have so much respect for the women’s team,” he stated, reflecting on the moment when Trump called during their celebration.

The earliest opportunity for the U.S. women's team to visit the White House would be in late spring after completing their PWHL season. The U.S. secured 12 gold medals in Milan Cortina, with women contributing significantly by winning eight of those medals. The women's hockey team dominated their competition, outscoring opponents 33-2 on their path to victory.

“This was the best American women’s hockey team we’ve ever assembled on the world stage,” Knight declared. “I want this legacy to be remembered.”
