Authorities are probing the circumstances surrounding the drowning of a competitor at the Ironman Texas triathlon. The incident unfolded during the swim segment of the event held in The Woodlands on Saturday, April 18, as confirmed by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) through a Facebook announcement.

Identified as Mara Flávia, a Brazilian triathlete and social media influencer, she was reported missing shortly after the swim began. The MCSO stated, “The Woodlands Fire Department (WFD) completed the rescue in Lake Woodlands near North Shore Park.” Following the recovery, which confirmed her death, an investigation was initiated in accordance with standard procedures.

“MCSO Major Crimes detectives are on scene and will continue their investigation. Our deepest sympathy goes to the family and friends of this participant,” the MCSO added, although they initially withheld her identity.

The Ironman Texas organization expressed their condolences via social media, stating, “We are saddened to confirm the death of a race participant during the swim portion of today's IRONMAN Texas triathlon. We send our deepest sympathies to the family…and will offer them our support as they go through this very difficult time.” They also acknowledged the efforts of first responders.

The triathlon consists of a 2.4-mile swim, followed by a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run. According to a post from volunteer Shawn McDonald, Flávia disappeared beneath the surface shortly after the swim commenced. Lifeguards and fellow competitors attempted multiple rescues before a dive team located her body around 9 a.m. local time.

“After the start, we paddled alongside swimmers, offering a hand…Then we heard a whistle. A group of younger volunteers in a kayak on the far side of the field were raising a flag, blowing a whistle, yelling for help,” McDonald recounted. “I could see swimmers clinging to their kayak. I heard them say, ‘She went under.' …The panic and fear on their faces won't leave me for a long time.”

“I dove in immediately and began searching … After about a minute underwater, I felt her body with my foot. I surfaced, took what seemed like the deepest breath I have ever taken and went back down. She was gone,” he continued. “I lost count of how many times I dove over the next hour …”

Flávia had garnered a following of 60,700 on Instagram, where she shared her journey in triathlons. A journalism graduate, she spent ten years in radio and television communications before pivoting to sports at age 28, according to reports from O Dia.

Further comments have been sought from both the MCSO and WFD regarding this tragic event.
