Aortic Dissection: The Fatal Heart Condition That Took Lindsey Graham

Jul 13 2026

A doctor described the agony of an aortic dissection as akin to a “knife to the heart,” a fitting metaphor for the condition that killed South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham.

Dr. Robert Aru from Thomas Jefferson University stated that patients with an aortic dissection experience “the worst chest or back pain of their life,” often characterized by a ripping or stabbing sensation.

Medical Examiners in Washington, D.C., confirmed that Graham, aged 71, died from “aortic dissection due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.” Dr. Kendra J. Grubb, a heart surgeon previously affiliated with Emory University, echoed the sentiment, describing the pain as a knife piercing the chest.

The senator's death was reported as stemming from a “brief and sudden illness.” Paramedics rushed to Graham’s residence in D.C. after receiving emergency calls about severe chest pains.

An aortic dissection occurs when the inner layer of the aorta tears, allowing blood to flow between the layers of the artery. If blood penetrates the outer layer, it is nearly always fatal, according to Your Vascular Health.

An official cause of death will be determined following toxicological and microscopic examinations.

Symptoms such as shortness of breath, fainting, difficulty walking, sudden vision loss, and intense chest pain are frequently misdiagnosed as heart attacks. However, this condition is distinct and typically necessitates emergency surgery to avert death.

Dr. Jason Lee, chief of vascular surgery at Stanford Medicine, noted that this condition is prevalent among men in their 60s and 70s who are exposed to high-stress environments.

Just two days prior to his death, Graham was engaged in diplomatic activities in Kyiv.

According to the John Ritter Foundation for Aortic Health, approximately 20,000 individuals in the U.S. experience an aortic tear each year.

This year alone, the condition also claimed the life of Graham’s fellow Republican lawmaker Rep. Doug LaMalfa from Ohio.
