Pandemic Nightmare: Mother Strangles Three Children in Shocking Act of Violence

On January 24, 2023, Lindsay Clancy, a 33-year-old nurse and mother, committed an unspeakable act. While her husband ran an errand, she strangled her three children—Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months—using exercise bands from their home gym.

Two starkly different narratives have emerged regarding Lindsay's actions. One portrays her as a cold-blooded killer; the other suggests she was a loving mother overwhelmed by mental illness.

Friends describe Lindsay as a normal middle-class woman who was kind yet reserved. Those closest to her recall laughter and fun, contrasting sharply with the monstrous image painted by the media.

“It’s been awful to witness as someone who has looked up to Lindsay for so many years,” said one friend. “The system failed her, and she doesn’t deserve what happened.”

Lindsay was part of a tight-knit group of girlfriends during high school in Wallingford, Connecticut. She excelled academically and was a competitive cheerleader. Her ambition to become a nurse was evident early on.

“Being a nurse and a mother was her life plan since high school,” recalled Samantha, a friend from that time. “Taking care of people just came naturally to her.”

After graduating from Quinnipiac University in 2012, Lindsay maintained close ties with her friends. They supported each other through college and beyond, celebrating milestones together.

In 2016, Lindsay met Patrick Clancy, and they quickly formed a strong bond. Friends noted how happy she seemed with him, describing him as the nicest guy she ever dated.

The couple married and welcomed their first child, Cora, on Christmas Eve 2017, followed by Dawson in September 2019. Lindsay worked as a labor and delivery nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Despite her professional success, Lindsay faced personal challenges. She sought parenting advice online, revealing struggles with her son Dawson’s behavior in a Facebook group.

In August 2022, she expressed feeling overwhelmed after the birth of her third child. “Had my third baby 2 months ago... I’m definitely struggling,” she wrote.

Patrick reported that Lindsay began experiencing anxiety about returning to work in September 2022. She sought help from multiple psychiatrists and even spent time in an inpatient psychiatric unit.

In November 2022, she posted about her worsening depression and insomnia on social media. She documented her medication struggles meticulously in journals.

Lindsay’s writings revealed deep emotional turmoil, including suicidal thoughts. She expressed feelings of resentment towards her children for preventing her from bonding with Callan.

In December 2022, despite expressing suicidal ideation to Patrick, doctors at a behavioral health clinic did not diagnose her with postpartum depression. This oversight would prove catastrophic.
