Carville Claims Kentucky Derby Reveals MAGA Voters' Regret

May 09 2026

James Carville wasn’t just placing bets at the Kentucky Derby; he was reading the room.

The legendary Democratic strategist emerged from the horse race with a bold claim: “buyer’s remorse” is surging among Donald Trump’s base. “It’s not just that the polling is bad; you can feel it,” Carville declared on “Politics War Room” Thursday. “You can just see the anger coming from people that you ... would never expect.”

His revelation came while mingling with James Williams Jr., the head honcho of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades. Williams shared a startling insight: most of his members cast their votes for Trump, but now they’re swimming in regret. “They got real buyer’s remorse now, which I think is a good sign,” Carville noted, a hint of satisfaction in his voice.

“We know that young people have real buyer’s remorse. We know that there’s real buyer’s remorse among Hispanics. Apparently, among blue-collar people, it’s pretty substantial,” he added, painting a picture of disillusionment across demographics.

Al Hunt, Carville’s podcast co-host, chimed in with his own anecdote. Riding the train between Washington and New York, he was approached by a handful of strangers who all had the same burning question: “When are we gonna get rid of this guy?”

“Two of them had volunteered that they voted for him,” Hunt recounted, underscoring the palpable frustration brewing among former supporters.

Trump’s approval ratings are a rollercoaster ride, fluctuating between 34% to 45%, according to a New York Times aggregation of surveys. The ongoing conflict Trump ignited with Iran has sent fuel prices soaring and costs skyrocketing, leaving many in his MAGA base feeling betrayed after he promised to steer clear of foreign entanglements during his campaign.

While recent polls indicate a dip in Hispanic voters’ approval ratings for Trump, there are signs of a rebound, complicating the narrative of regret. The political landscape is shifting, and Carville seems to be riding the wave of change, one Derby observation at a time.
