James Comey, the former FBI Director, voluntarily surrendered on Wednesday in the Eastern District of Virginia, facing serious allegations stemming from a social media post that purportedly threatened President Donald Trump.
His self-surrender follows an indictment issued on Tuesday, which includes two felony counts. The charges are linked to an Instagram post where seashells were arranged to display the numbers “86 47.” The number “86” is often interpreted as slang for “to nix,” while “47” refers to Trump being the 47th president of the United States.
This legal action marks the second instance of prosecution against Comey during Trump's administration. He was previously dismissed from his position in 2017 amid an investigation into potential collusion between Trump's campaign and Russia during the 2016 election.
The earlier case, which accused Comey of lying to Congress, was dismissed last year after a judge determined that the federal prosecutor involved had been appointed unlawfully.
In response to the latest charges, Comey took to social media on Tuesday. "Well, they’re back — this time about a picture of seashells on a North Carolina beach a year ago, and this won’t be the end of it," he stated in a video.
"But nothing has changed with me. I’m still innocent, I’m still not afraid and I still believe in the independent federal judiciary. So let’s go," he added, expressing defiance against the allegations.
The controversial Instagram post, which has since been deleted, featured a photo of seashells arranged to form the numbers "86 47." In the caption, Comey remarked, "Cool shell formation on my beach walk."
Trump's status as the 47th president is significant, and the Merriam-Webster dictionary defines "eighty-six" or "86" as slang meaning "to reject, discontinue, or get rid of (something)."
In May, Trump commented on the situation during an interview with Fox News, asserting that Comey understood the implications of his post. "A child knows what that meant,” Trump claimed. “If you’re the FBI director and you don’t know what that meant, that meant assassination. And it says it loud and clear.”
