'Cowardly': House Republican Bombarded With Jeers, Outrage At Tumultuous Town Hall

Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) encountered a torrent of jeers and discontent from his constituents during a town hall meeting on Sunday, where he defended his backing of President Donald Trump’s contentious Iran war.

“You claim that you’ll voice your disagreements with Trump, but that’s insufficient,” shouted a man who ignited “loud cheers” from the audience, according to reports. “You must impeach. He’s a fraud, he’s corrupt, he’s an incompetent psychopath. The Republican Party and you are enabling him. You’re all cowards, and you’re spineless.” This outburst led to his removal from the auditorium at Mahopac High School in New York.

These remarks came shortly after Lawler, a focal point for contentious town halls since Trump’s return to office, advocated for the president's military actions, asserting that America must “do everything we can to ensure” the Iranian regime does not acquire nuclear capabilities.

Footage shared by a journalist shows a man vocally opposing the congressman as he was escorted out, though it remains uncertain if it was the same individual.

As Lawler prepares to fend off Democratic challengers in the upcoming November elections, he faced inquiries regarding his party's rejection of a proposal aimed at compelling Trump to terminate the war last month.

“The president is well within his authority to conduct the strikes that have been executed,” Lawler stated, met with a chorus of boos from the audience. “If, at the end of these 90 days, the conflict is not resolved, then yes, Congress should take steps to authorize continued force,” he added, labeling it “idiotic” to demand troop withdrawal from the region at this juncture.

Earlier in the event, Lawler chastised the crowd for their behavior, likening it to that of “high school students.” He later faced accusations of having “abdicated” his responsibilities to his constituents in New York.

“You have endangered our young people and service members and caused civilian casualties by failing to confront Trump on this unjustified war,” remarked Marion Walsh, identifying herself as a military mother and daughter.

The audience appeared “almost evenly split” between supporters and detractors of Lawler, as reported. One supporter suggested that Lawler should engage more actively in Iran negotiations, calling him “a commonsense guy,” while others concurred with his assessment that critics were behaving worse than students in the auditorium.
