Denise Powell Claims Victory in Nebraska's Democratic Primary for Key House Seat

May 14 2026

Denise Powell has emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for Nebraska’s 2nd District, a crucial battleground that could flip the House this year. The political organizer triumphed over state Sen. John Cavanaugh in a nail-biting contest, with Powell snagging 39% of the vote to Cavanaugh’s 37%, as nearly all ballots were counted.

Powell now gears up for a showdown against Omaha City Council member Brinker Harding, who cruised to the Republican nomination without opposition. This race is heating up, with both candidates eyeing a seat that has been a Democratic target for years.

Major outside groups threw their weight behind Powell, who was viewed as the moderate choice. She received endorsements from EMILY’s List, the Congressional Black Caucus, and several other influential organizations. Meanwhile, Cavanaugh, the progressive contender, had the backing of the Congressional Progressive Caucus PAC and local unions, creating a stark contrast in campaign strategies.

The stakes are high in Nebraska’s 2nd District, especially after GOP Rep. Don Bacon announced his retirement. Bacon has held the seat for five terms, winning by slim margins each time. His departure has sparked renewed hope among Democrats eager to claim this Omaha-based district, which Biden and Harris carried in the last presidential elections.

In a pre-primary interview, Powell brushed off concerns about a negative ad campaign targeting her, which included accusations of being “dark money Denise.” “I’m confident that Nebraska Democrats recognize this as a tremendous opportunity,” she stated, exuding determination.

With over $5 million spent on TV ads leading up to the primary, according to AdImpact, the competition was fierce. Local party leaders have urged unity among Democratic candidates to rally behind whoever wins the nomination. “At the end of the day, we all want to flip this seat,” Powell emphasized.

To regain control of the House in November, Democrats need to net at least three seats. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates the 2nd District race as “Lean Democrat,” making it a critical focus for party strategists.
