Deputy U.S. Marshal Gunned Down While Attempting Arrest in Louisiana
A deputy U.S. Marshal met a violent end while serving an arrest warrant on a fugitive in Alexandria, Louisiana. The Marshals Service confirmed the fatal shooting, stating the suspect is now in custody.
The Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office reported that its detectives were present with the marshals when the gunfire erupted around 3 p.m.
Following a standoff that dragged on for approximately three hours, the suspect, who suffered injuries during the incident, was apprehended and taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.
The FBI, alongside the sheriff's office and Louisiana State Police, is conducting a joint investigation into the shooting, with the FBI taking the lead. The New Orleans office has classified the incident as an assault on a federal officer.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced on social media late Monday night that the bureau is "offering full resources" to assist both the sheriff's office and the Marshals Service. He urged the public to "please pray for the deputy's family and friends."
Authorities have withheld the identities of both the deceased marshal and the suspect, as well as the specific reasons law enforcement was pursuing him.
Neighbors in the area expressed shock, revealing they knew the suspect who lived just a few houses away from where the shooting took place.
One neighbor, who chose to remain anonymous, described her disbelief at the incident, stating, "He was a good man. You know? He was always in good spirits. You know? So definitely didn't expect this."
Louis Means, a cashier at a nearby Tobacco Plus, echoed similar sentiments, recalling a time he gave the suspect a ride to Popeye's. "He spoke a lot of life into me. He was a good dude. He had a lot of wisdom on him. You never would have expected something like this," he said.
Another resident recounted hearing multiple gunshots and immediately took action to protect her children. "I just kept telling them, just get down. I had them in the room, down. Because I didn't know what was going on," she said.
Alexandria is located approximately 95 miles northwest of Baton Rouge.
