DHS to Invest $7.5M in Smart Glasses for Immigration Agents

Apr 25 2026

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is preparing to invest $7.5 million in the development of advanced “smart glasses” designed for federal immigration agents, as reported by various sources.

This funding, earmarked for the upcoming fiscal year, aims to equip agents with technology that enhances their ability to identify individuals who may have entered the United States unlawfully. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to bolster immigration enforcement efforts.

Documents reviewed indicate that these smart glasses will provide agents with “real-time access to information and biometric identification capabilities in the field.” The goal is to have a functional prototype ready by the first quarter of next year, according to the proposal.

Included in the Trump administration’s budget proposal for fiscal year 2027, this allocation reflects a commitment to enhancing DHS's operational capacity to “encounter, transport, detain and remove migrants who are in the United States illegally.”

A budget document highlights that these advancements will facilitate “efficient and effective immigration enforcement, removal operations, and fulfillment of executive orders and administrative priorities while ensuring public safety and operational excellence.”

However, as of Friday afternoon, a DHS spokesperson clarified that “no funds have been committed to any form of ‘smart glasses.’”

The spokesperson further explained that the Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) is continuously evaluating the needs of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other DHS components. This process involves collaboration with privacy offices, chief information officers, and legal advisors to ensure compliance with legal standards.

Interestingly, prior investigations have shown that DHS agents have already utilized personal smart glasses. Reports indicate that agents across at least six states have been seen wearing Meta’s AI glasses since the Trump administration began, with some instances involving recording and photographing members of the public.

As the DHS explores this new technology, Meta is simultaneously working on integrating a facial recognition feature into its smart glasses. This addition would enable users to identify individuals and access information about them through Meta’s AI assistant, as noted in a February report.
