Elon Musk Clashes with Jon Stewart Over X Platform Critique

Mar 20 2026

Elon Musk confronted Jon Stewart, host of The Daily Show, after Stewart criticized his social media platform X, previously known as Twitter. Musk described Stewart as “an extremely skilled propagandist.”

On a recent episode of his podcast, The Weekly Show, Stewart expressed concerns about Musk's claims regarding undocumented voting, stating that such rhetoric is “sowing the seeds of our destruction.” He emphasized that Musk’s influence through his platform and its algorithms poses a greater threat to democracy than any alleged voting irregularities.

“The irony of it all is [because of] this guy’s platform, this guy’s algorithm, which he is in charge of... he is a far more relevant actor in the warping of our democracy,” Stewart asserted, as his guests, Casey Newton and Renee DiResta, nodded in agreement. “What his argument – and I think his people’s argument – would be, is: Now that we’re getting uncensored material, now that the First Amendment has primacy, people move to the right because they learn the truth.”

Stewart continued, “But the truth is that the algorithm incentivizes the misinformation from the right, and he designs it.” Musk responded to a clip of this exchange on X, stating: “Jon Stewart is an extremely skilled propagandist disguised as a truth-teller.”

Stewart retorted, “Elon Musk is an extremely skilled propagandist,” omitting any qualifiers. Musk playfully replied, “Not as good as you! Stop being so humble,” which led Stewart to renew his invitation for Musk to appear on his show.

In February 2025, while overseeing President Donald Trump’s DOGE initiative aimed at reducing federal spending, Musk had indicated he would join Stewart’s show if it aired unedited. The show responded enthusiastically on X but has yet to see Musk fulfill this promise. Stewart later expressed frustration over being “ghosted” by Musk.

“Judging from his most recent revelations of his baby mamas, I think everyone has been left on read at some point by that gentleman,” Stewart quipped. “I got left on read, man.” He elaborated on his attempts to reach out: “I did DM him. I texted him and just said like, ‘Hey man, so is there somebody I should, you know, have our guys reach out to, to make this happen?’ And I got ghosted.”

Stewart criticized the notion of cancel culture in America, arguing that those who oppose Trump face immediate backlash. He remarked, “The real cancel culture in this country is anybody who might speak out against Donald Trump.”

In another exchange regarding the potential interview, Stewart took issue with Musk’s claim that he could not be trusted for a fair discussion: “The guy who custom-made his own Dark MAGA hat – that he wears to opine in the Oval Office with the president, who he spent $270 million to elect – thinks I’m just too partisan.”

Musk also commented on an incident where Stewart injured himself while expressing frustration over prescription drug prices. During a rant, Stewart accidentally cut his hand while smashing a coffee mug and joked about needing hospital care. Musk tweeted in response: “I will send him some DOGE merch to comfort him while he recovers from this injury.”

Additionally, Musk reacted with a dart-hitting-a-bullseye emoji to a comment suggesting that Democrats are so consumed by anti-Elon sentiment that they ultimately harm themselves.
