Eric Swalwell Halts California Governor Campaign Amid Assault Allegations

Apr 13 2026

U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell announced the suspension of his campaign for California governor, facing serious allegations of sexual assault and misconduct from at least four women. The congressman, who vehemently denies the claims, stated that he would address these accusations outside the political arena.

"I am suspending my campaign for Governor," Swalwell declared on social media platform X. "To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I've made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made — but that's my fight, not a campaign's."

Swalwell had been gaining momentum with significant endorsements and was considered a frontrunner among Democratic candidates ahead of the June 2 primary. However, following reports from major news outlets detailing the allegations, key supporters began to withdraw their backing. Prominent figures such as former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and current House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries publicly urged him to exit the race.

Senator Adam Schiff, a long-time ally of Swalwell, expressed his distress over the allegations, stating on X, "I have read the San Francisco Chronicle's account and I am deeply distressed by its allegations. I am withdrawing my endorsement immediately, and believe that he should withdraw from the race."

The allegations reported include accounts from four women, most of whom remain anonymous, detailing incidents ranging from inappropriate photos to claims of assault after consuming alcohol. Some of these women had previously worked for Swalwell, with incidents reportedly occurring between 2019 and last year.

In a video posted late Friday, Swalwell asserted that "these allegations are flat false. And I will fight them." Yet he also acknowledged personal missteps, stating that he had "made mistakes in judgment in my past," and expressed regret for involving his family in this situation.

At 45 years old, Swalwell is married with three children. He indicated plans to spend the weekend privately with his family following the announcement. Previously a candidate for the presidency in 2019, Swalwell has been a prominent figure on cable news as a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump. He has represented a district in the San Francisco Bay area for over a decade and had opted not to seek re-election in Congress to focus on his gubernatorial aspirations.

Former Representative Katie Porter, another Democratic contender for governor, called for Swalwell to resign from Congress immediately. "He has attempted to silence and retaliate against these victims," Porter wrote on X. "These allegations merit full investigations, and these women deserve the right to pursue justice."

On Saturday, Republican Representative Anna Paulina Luna announced her intention to file a motion to expel Swalwell from Congress. By Sunday, additional Democratic colleagues expressed support for his potential expulsion.

The impact of Swalwell's campaign suspension on the governor's race remains uncertain. Concerns have been raised among Democratic leaders about a fragmented voter base potentially benefiting Republican candidates in the "top two" primary system. His exit could lead to a consolidation of support around another Democratic candidate as the election approaches.
