ESPN's Stephen A. Smith Confirms He Won't Pursue Presidential Bid

Mar 11 2026

In a candid moment during a recent interview with Sean Hannity, Stephen A. Smith, the outspoken ESPN commentator, laid to rest any lingering speculation about a presidential run in 2028.

Smith, who has been dropping hints about a potential candidacy since August 2022, clarified his stance on the matter. He previously mentioned to Paul Finebaum that he might consider a run if he believed victory was possible, despite having “no desire to ever be a politician.”

His political musings have often included the caveat that any campaign would align with Democratic values. In a November 2024 appearance on “The View,” he suggested he might enter the race if there was significant public demand.

“2028’s coming pretty quick,” Hannity remarked during their exchange. “If you had to pick ― I think it’s all bullshit ― I don’t think you’re running. Am I right?”

“I don’t think I’m running either,” Smith replied, adding, “’Cause I gotta give up my money [and] I ain’t giving up my money.”

According to reports, Smith recently secured a lucrative contract extension with ESPN worth $100 million over five years, alongside a $36 million deal with Sirius XM for three years. This financial stability seems to play a significant role in his decision-making process.

“Let me put my presidential aspirations to bed,” Smith stated firmly. “If I have to give up my money, it’s not happening.”

His announcement marks a definitive end to years of speculation regarding his political ambitions. In April 2025, he had indicated that he was taking the idea more seriously after discussions with various political figures, including “people on Capitol Hill” and local officials who encouraged him to consider the role. Last June, he revealed that both Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna and right-wing podcaster Steve Bannon had attempted to persuade him to run.
