FCC Chair Sparks Outrage After Warning Broadcasters Over Iran Coverage

Mar 15 2026

FCC Chair Brendan Carr ignited controversy with a stark warning to broadcasters regarding their coverage of the ongoing conflict in Iran. His remarks came in response to President Donald Trump’s grievances about media portrayals of the war.

“Broadcasters that are running hoaxes and news distortions — also known as the fake news — have a chance now to correct course before their license renewals come up,” Carr stated on X, emphasizing the legal obligations of broadcasters to serve the public interest. “They will lose their licenses if they do not.”

Accompanying his post was a screenshot of Trump’s tirade on Truth Social, where he criticized legacy media for their reporting on the situation, which has now extended into its third week.

This warning is part of a broader pattern from the administration, which has consistently targeted news organizations over unfavorable coverage since Trump’s return to the White House, including threats to revoke licenses.

Democratic lawmakers swiftly condemned Carr’s comments. California Governor Gavin Newsom labeled the warning as “flagrantly unconstitutional,” while Senator Mark Kelly described it as an “overreach by the FCC.”

Representative Ted Lieu did not hold back, telling Carr to “take your fascist s*** and shove it.” He warned that any attempts to enforce such actions would lead to lawsuits and significant legal scrutiny, stating, “And legal discovery will be awesome. Because the American people can then find out what the Administration keeps hiding.”

Senator Chris Murphy echoed these sentiments, accusing the administration of coercing news stations into providing favorable coverage or facing license revocation. “A truly extraordinary moment,” he remarked on X. “We aren't on the verge of a totalitarian takeover. WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF IT. Act like it.”

The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, a group advocating for free speech, criticized Carr’s statement, asserting that Americans deserve “uncensored news about the men and women serving in our armed forces.”

“Brendan Carr’s authoritarian warning — that networks risk their broadcasting licenses for Iran war reporting that the government doesn’t like — is outrageous,” they stated. “When the government demands the press become a state mouthpiece under the threat of punishment, something has gone very wrong.”

This backlash follows Carr's recent announcement that his agency is considering an “enforcement action” against ABC’s The View concerning the equal time rule, which mandates equal airtime for competing political candidates upon request.

Simultaneously, Carr criticized late-night host Stephen Colbert for claiming CBS had advised against airing an interview with a Democratic Senate candidate from Texas. CBS later clarified that Colbert was not prohibited from airing the interview but was informed that doing so could invoke the equal time rule.

"CBS was very clear that Colbert could run the interview that he wanted with that political candidate,” Carr explained during an appearance on Fox News. “They just said, ‘you may have to comply with equal time,’ which would have meant potentially giving air time to Jasmine Crockett and another candidate,” he added. “But instead of doing that, they claimed that they were victims.”
