Decades after the iconic show left the airwaves, the original Gladiators star is back in the spotlight, flaunting a body that would make today’s competitors quiver. The blonde powerhouse, Kim Betts, once struck terror into the hearts of contenders on Saturday night TV, and now, more than 30 years later, she remains an unstoppable force.
Trading in her Lycra for the bodybuilding stage, Betts is living proof that age is merely a number. Her jaw-dropping physique is a testament to her relentless dedication to fitness.
While the BBC's flashy reboot has introduced a new generation of ripped gladiators, the OG queen remains the gold standard for fitness excellence.

Lightning was a household name by 1992, holding the remarkable title of being the only female Gladiator to appear in every single series of the original run. Known for her fierce determination, she was famously undefeated in the UK, with her only loss occurring during a fierce battle in the first Ashes series down under.
Even motherhood couldn’t slow her down. In a display of superhuman strength, Betts gave birth to her son, Lexus, just three weeks before returning to the arena for the 1999 series.
The grandmother of one isn’t putting down her weights anytime soon. Alongside her husband Frank Betts, she has taken the professional bodybuilding world by storm, racking up impressive accolades including the IBFA Mr and Miss Universe title in 2020. She also snagged the title of Miss Universe Over 40s that same year.
Now serving as the Director of 2B Lightning Fit Ltd, Betts dedicates her time to transforming lives through personalized training and elite meal plans.

Despite her legendary status, she’s been left out of the current reboot’s lineup, much to the dismay of die-hard fans. Speaking on ITV’s This Morning, she revealed she was kept in the dark about the show’s return.
“Honestly, everyone kept asking me if I was coming back or what I knew,” she said. “I literally just found out on the radio; that’s all I know. It feels like an X-file right now—no one knows what they’re planning.”
Even without a prime-time slot, these legends are proving they can still draw a crowd. Lightning is set to reunite with fellow original icons Jet, Hunter, and Saracen this May.
This powerhouse quartet, who helped shape 90s British culture, will be making a live appearance at the Gladiators Experience at NEC Birmingham.

Before she was dodging pugil sticks, Betts was a decorated gymnast, racking up an impressive 32 medals between ages 10 and 16. That discipline has clearly paid off; with 35,000 Instagram followers hanging on her every post, she continues to share updates on her grueling training sessions and her rock-solid relationship with Frank.
