Graffiti measuring approximately 15 by 30 feet was found at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on Friday, prompting an immediate investigation by U.S. Park Police. The vandalism was reported around 7:20 a.m. by the National Park Service, which is overseeing the site’s high-profile renovation.
“The affected area has been secured and covered while cleanup is arranged,” stated a spokesperson for the U.S. Park Police, emphasizing the seriousness of the incident.
Described as “unacceptable” by the agency, the graffiti displayed the numbers “86 47,” a sequence that has sparked various interpretations. In culinary terms, “86” often signifies removing an item from a menu, but some Republicans have perceived it as a veiled threat against Donald Trump, the 47th president.
This incident follows the recent indictment of former FBI Director James Comey, who faces charges related to a social media post featuring seashells arranged to spell “8647.” Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has dismissed claims that these charges are politically motivated, marking the second time Comey has faced prosecution, which Trump has publicly advocated for.

In a related twist, a Florida political candidate has challenged the Department of Justice to take action against him for merchandise displaying “8647.”
The graffiti discovery coincides with heightened security concerns surrounding the president. Just last Saturday, a man was charged with attempted assassination after breaching a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton during a major event.
The Reflecting Pool is currently undergoing an accelerated beautification project initiated by Trump and managed by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. This renovation includes installing a blue surface at the pool's bottom to align with the American flag and address issues with a leaking granite foundation.
Andrew Leyden, a media freelancer based in Washington, reported observing police activity and tarps covering parts of the pool on Friday morning. “Two areas of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool are covered by tarps this morning, and US Park Police are on scene talking to workers and apparently looking for evidence,” Leyden shared on X. “Unknown what happened, but the construction site has reportedly had some graffiti over the last few days, and the ‘Thank You Trump’ banners have been removed.”

The Interior Department, echoing statements from U.S. Park Police, aims to complete the renovation ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations this summer. Trump has previously criticized the state of the landmark under the previous administration, asserting that it would be fully restored by July 4.
“Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum and I are working on fixing the absolutely filthy Reflecting Pool between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “This work was supposed to be done by the Biden Administration, but Sleepy Joe doesn’t know what ‘CLEAN’ or proper maintenance is — The President and Secretary do!”
