‘I experienced Kinky Boots with an X Factor star and was captivated before the show even started’
Matt Cardle's powerful vocals resonated throughout the venue, setting a high bar for the night ahead.
Before the curtain rose on Kinky Boots, my evening was already etched in memory. Some theatre outings are simply events; others, like this one, radiate a special energy long before you settle into your seat.
At Colonel Saab, a Kinky Boots-themed dining experience created an electric atmosphere that heightened anticipation for the show at the London Coliseum, where Cardle stars. Honestly, I was already entranced before Lola made her entrance.

Located just a stone's throw from Trafalgar Square, Colonel Saab transcends the typical pre-theatre stop. The decor feels like a performance in itself—rich hues, intricate details, and a vibrant ambiance transport you to a realm far more glamorous than mere dining. It’s moody, sophisticated, and just theatrical enough to make you forget you’re still waiting for the main event.
The themed menu at Colonel Saab is where creativity truly shines. It’s clever yet not overdone, playful without being forced, and clearly crafted with genuine thought.
The experience kicks off with a signature whisky cocktail that perfectly sets the mood, followed by a whimsical amuse bouche—a light, spiced street food-inspired bite that awakens the palate immediately.

Starters burst with bold flavors, featuring crisp vegetable tikkis and vibrant chaat-inspired dishes that deliver heat and texture without overwhelming the senses.
The restaurant’s Kinky Boots menu is a delightful surprise.
Main courses continue the theme of comfort with a twist, offering rich, slow-cooked chicken curry alongside hearty vegetarian options like zimikand and beetroot tikki plates that feel both familiar and elevated. It’s soul food dressed for the theatre.

Dessert is a show-stopping finale: nostalgic pineapple jalebi paired with creamy rabri and pistachio kulfi strikes a balance between indulgence and extravagance in the best way possible.
By the time dessert arrives, it feels as if the night has already reached its peak before the curtain has even lifted.
This brings us to Kinky Boots at the Coliseum.

The performance itself is filled with heart, humor, and high energy, though it occasionally stumbles in pacing. Yet when it hits its stride, it truly resonates.
Matt Cardle, who rose to fame as the winner of The X Factor in 2010, shines as Charlie. He infuses the role with a quiet vulnerability that enhances the emotional weight of the musical numbers. His performance feels grounded and sincere, capturing Charlie's internal struggles beautifully.
However, the real standout is Lola.

Tosh Wanogho Maud stepped into the iconic heels usually worn by Strictly star Johannes Radebe on our night, and he commanded the stage with undeniable presence. From his first appearance, he exudes sass, soul, and impressive vocal power. It’s hard to look away from him during emotionally charged moments like “Not My Father’s Son,” which hits with profound impact.
As the big numbers unfold, the entire theatre comes alive. By the time “Raise You Up” plays, you realize that good theatre has done its job—it has transported you somewhere special.
Yet in truth, Colonel Saab may have already taken you there first.
