Israeli Soldier Allegedly Vandalizes Crucifix in Lebanon, Sparking Outrage

JERUSALEM/BEIRUT, April 20 - A shocking image surfaced over the weekend, depicting an Israeli soldier using an axe to smash a crucifix in a southern Lebanese village known for its Christian population. The incident has triggered a wave of outrage from Israeli officials, U.S. representatives, and religious leaders alike.

The photo, shared by Palestinian journalist Younis Tirawi, shows the soldier striking the fallen sculpture of Jesus on the cross. Tirawi has previously documented instances of alleged misconduct by Israeli soldiers in Gaza, raising questions about military conduct in conflict zones.

Verification of the image's location confirmed it was taken in Debel, a village that has remained inhabited during the ongoing Israeli military operations against Hezbollah, which escalated on March 2 following rocket fire directed at Israel.

According to Fadi Falfel, a local priest, the crucifix was part of a small shrine situated in the garden of a family residing on the outskirts of Debel. “One of the Israeli soldiers broke the cross and did this horrible thing, this desecration of our holy symbols,” he stated, expressing deep sorrow over the act.

The Assembly of Catholic Ordinaries of the Holy Land, including Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa of Jerusalem, condemned the act as “a grave affront to the Christian faith.” Their statement emphasized a troubling lack of respect for sacred symbols and human dignity.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to the incident, asserting that the soldier's actions contradict Jewish values of tolerance. He vowed that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken. “I was stunned and saddened to learn that an IDF soldier damaged a Catholic religious icon in southern Lebanon. I condemn the act in the strongest terms,” he expressed on social media platform X.

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee echoed this sentiment, calling for “swift, severe, & public consequences” for the soldier involved. Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar labeled the actions as disgraceful and shameful, offering apologies to Christians affected by the incident. “We apologize for this incident and to every Christian whose feelings were hurt,” he stated on X.
