Kai Trump’s Shocking ESPY Debut: Best Dressed Amidst Controversy

Jul 19 2026

Kai Trump, the granddaughter of Donald Trump, made waves at the 2026 ESPY Awards, where she was dubbed 'best dressed' despite a storm of online ridicule. The 19-year-old, aiming for an ESPY award next year, turned heads in a custom gold gown by Alice + Olivia.

The event unfolded at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in New York City on July 15. Kai's entrance was marked by a striking floor-length gown featuring crystal-trimmed spaghetti straps, a plunging sweetheart neckline, and a thigh-high slit. She paired the dress with silver metallic stiletto sandals and diamond jewelry.

However, her heavily bronzed makeup drew scorn from critics, some comparing her appearance to that of her grandfather. The backlash intensified as social media users questioned her authenticity and privilege.

Documenting the event for her YouTube channel, Kai expressed excitement but admitted to feeling overwhelmed. In the VIP section, she spotted a Daily Mail article that labeled her as 'best dressed' and shared her aspirations for future awards.

“I got best dressed,” she exclaimed while holding the article up to the camera. “I just texted Stacey from Alice and Olivia, who customized this dress.”

Despite not having won an ESPY yet, she declared, “Next year we’re coming for that.” She emphasized the importance of humility and staying true to oneself.

Kai praised her makeup artist Brianna, revealing she chose to fly her in from Florida instead of hiring a local beautician. The ESPYs, hosted by Marcello Hernández—the first Latino host in 25 years—celebrate outstanding athletic achievements.

During a red carpet interview, Kai distanced herself from politics, stating, “Honestly, I kind of stay out of politics completely; it’s just not my thing.”

She added, “I just like showing my life and how you can still be an athlete and enjoy a ton of other things.”

Critics on social media were quick to point out her privileged upbringing. One user questioned, “How you got to where you are today? Born into a billionaire family?”

Another remarked, “If you say ‘I stay out of politics it’s not my thing,’ I immediately think you’re an idiot and full of s--t.”

Amidst the fashion frenzy, Kai provided an update on her mother, Vanessa, who is battling breast cancer. “My mom’s doing good,” she told Page Six. “She’s doing better.”

Vanessa had previously shared her diagnosis in May, expressing gratitude for her medical team and support from family during her treatment journey.

“I am staying focused and hopeful while surrounded by the love and support of my family,” she stated in an emotional message.
