Kash Patel Threatens Legal Action Over Allegations of Alcohol Misuse

Apr 19 2026

FBI Director Kash Patel announced plans to initiate legal proceedings on Friday after a report from The Atlantic raised questions about his professional conduct, citing multiple officials who expressed concerns regarding his alleged alcohol consumption.

In the article titled “The FBI Director Is MIA,” reporter Sarah Fitzpatrick included a statement attributed to Patel, which read, “Print it, all false, I’ll see you in court — bring your checkbook.”

Patel reiterated his stance on social media platform X, stating, “see you and your entire entourage of false reporting in court… But do keep at it with the fake news, actual malice standard is now what some would call a legal lay up.” His post featured a screenshot of an email from the FBI’s assistant director for public affairs.

In the purported email, Benjamin Williamson expressed disbelief at the claims made in the article, stating, “Sarah, Top to bottom, this is one of the most absurd things I’ve ever read. Completely false at a nearly 100% clip. And with a two hour deadline. Copying my colleague Erica. We’ll get you some more thorough responses.”

The allegations detailed in Fitzpatrick's report are serious. She noted that on several occasions over the past year, members of Patel’s security detail struggled to wake him due to apparent intoxication, as reported to officials within the Justice Department and the White House.

Furthermore, Fitzpatrick revealed that a request for “breaching equipment”—typically utilized by SWAT teams—was made last year because Patel was unreachable behind locked doors, according to multiple sources familiar with the situation.

In another incident, Patel reportedly had difficulty accessing an internal computer system last Friday and mistakenly believed he had been locked out intentionally, leading him to panic and contact aides and allies to assert that he had been dismissed by the White House.

Fitzpatrick attributed these accounts to nine individuals, with two describing Patel’s reaction as a “freak-out.”

“Early in his tenure, meetings and briefings had to be rescheduled for later in the day as a result of his alcohol-fueled nights,” Fitzpatrick wrote, citing six current and former officials familiar with Patel’s schedule.

In response to the allegations, FBI media adviser Erica Knight took to social media on Friday to assert that the “so-called ‘intoxication incidents’” occurred “exactly ZERO times,” while also listing achievements under Patel’s leadership, including arrests and drug seizures.

Knight concluded her post by confirming that a lawsuit would be filed against those making the allegations.

During an appearance on MS NOW’s “The Briefing with Jen Psaki,” Fitzpatrick was asked about Knight’s comments. She responded, “I say that I am a very careful, very diligent award-winning investigative reporter with a history of award-winning work.”

Patel’s conduct has faced scrutiny for some time. A notable incident occurred in February when he celebrated Team USA’s gold medal win at the Winter Olympics by drinking beer with players in their locker room.

Despite promising to investigate the Jeffrey Epstein case thoroughly during his nomination as FBI director, Patel later claimed that Epstein never trafficked victims and took his own life, statements met with skepticism from many observers.
