Kimmel Exposes Right-Wing Double Standards on AOC and Mullin
Jimmy Kimmel confronted the glaring double standards of right-wing media during his recent show, specifically targeting the backlash he received for remarks about Markwayne Mullin, the new Homeland Security Secretary, who previously worked as a plumber. Kimmel drew a parallel to the frequent critiques aimed at Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) regarding her background.
“I’m not upset that the head of Homeland Security was a plumber; I’m upset that he isn’t still a plumber,” Kimmel stated, emphasizing the absurdity of the outrage from figures like Finnerty and Hannity. “The best part of all of this is that I distinctly remember some very serious concerns resume-wise when it came to a certain former bartender from New York.”
To illustrate his point, Kimmel showcased a montage featuring clips from Fox News and Newsmax, where various commentators questioned Ocasio-Cortez’s qualifications based on her previous job as a bartender. “She has no idea where Venezuela is on a map, because they don’t teach geography in bartending school,” remarked right-wing commentator Benny Johnson in one clip.
In another segment, Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) likened Ocasio-Cortez to Vice President Kamala Harris but with “more bartending experience.” This criticism stands in stark contrast to Ocasio-Cortez’s academic credentials; she holds two bachelor’s degrees in economics and international relations from Boston University, as noted on her congressional biography.
“Well, on behalf of bartenders everywhere,” Kimmel quipped, “We anxiously await your apology. You do the bartenders. I’ll do the plumbers.” His humor continued as he remarked on the implications of having a plumber in charge of national security: “We have a plumber protecting us from terrorism now.”
