Kouri Richins, Utah Mother Who Penned Grief Book, Convicted of Husband's Murder
Kouri Richins, a mother from Utah, was convicted of murdering her husband, Eric Richins, after a jury reached a verdict following three hours of deliberation. This case has drawn significant attention, particularly due to her subsequent publication of a children's book about grief.
Richins, 35, faced serious allegations of poisoning her husband in March 2022. Prosecutors detailed how she allegedly mixed a Moscow Mule cocktail laced with a lethal dose of fentanyl, nearly five times the amount deemed fatal, and served it to him at their home near Park City.
The charges against her included aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder, both of which could result in life imprisonment. Additionally, she faced charges related to mortgage fraud and forgery, as she reportedly signed documents to close a multimillion-dollar real estate deal just a day after her husband's death. Despite these accusations, Richins maintained her innocence throughout the trial.
A sentencing hearing is set for May 13. Upon hearing the verdict, Richins appeared visibly shaken, wearing a floral blouse and breathing heavily as the jury's decision was announced.
"Honestly, I feel like we're all in shock. It's been a long time coming," stated Amy Richins, Eric's sister, expressing relief that justice had been served for her brother.
The trial commenced in February at the Summit County Courthouse and spanned approximately three weeks. The prosecution presented 13 days of testimony without calling any witnesses from the defense side. Notably, Richins chose not to testify herself, while the prosecution portrayed her as someone motivated by financial gain.
During the investigation into Eric's poisoning, family members expressed suspicions about Kouri's involvement. His sister recalled that Eric had previously believed Kouri attempted to harm him during a trip to Greece years earlier. Furthermore, court documents revealed an incident on Valentine's Day 2022 when Eric experienced hives and breathing difficulties after consuming a sandwich made by Kouri.
One neighbor testified that Kouri had remarked around Christmas 2021 that it would be better if her husband were dead following an argument. Court filings indicated that Eric was contemplating divorce at the time of his death and had disputes with Kouri over purchasing a $2 million mansion for her real estate endeavors. Prosecutors noted that Kouri was the beneficiary of multiple life insurance policies on Eric, which she had acquired without his knowledge between 2015 and 2017. Just after his death, she allegedly finalized the purchase of the mansion.
In the months following Eric's death, Kouri gained attention for her children's book titled "Are You with Me?" which focused on coping with loss. She appeared on local television to discuss the challenges faced by her and her three sons in dealing with their grief, describing their father's unexpected passing.
Kouri Richins was arrested in May 2023.
