Lisa Kudrow Reflects on Being 'the Sixth Friend' in Friends: 'Nobody Cared About Me'
Lisa Kudrow's experience on Friends was marked by a sense of invisibility.

In a candid interview with a U.K. publication, the actress, now 62, expressed that during her time portraying Phoebe Buffay, she felt largely disregarded. “Nobody cared about me,” she stated, reflecting on her role in the iconic series that aired from 1994 to 2004.
Kudrow recounted how certain factions within her talent agency referred to her simply as “the sixth Friend.” This label, she noted, underscored a lack of vision for her career beyond the show. “There was no vision for me, and no expectations about the kind of career I could have,” she explained.

Despite these sentiments, Kudrow found herself liberated to explore diverse roles in film and television. She highlighted her performances in projects like 1996’s Mother, 1997’s Clockwatchers, and 1999’s Analyze This, the latter featuring Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal. It was with Analyze This that she noticed a shift; “the agents and business people started circling, wanting to put me in romantic comedies and things,” she recalled.
Friends, which followed the lives of six friends navigating life in New York City, also starred Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and the late Matthew Perry. The show became a cultural phenomenon over its ten-season run.
Kudrow's portrayal of Phoebe earned her an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 1998. Yet, she has often defended her character against perceptions of being merely a ditz. In a March interview for Interview Magazine, she remarked, “At the time, it was like, 'She’s such a ditz. How is it that you only play ditzes?' And I thought, 'Is she a ditz?' To me, she wasn’t.”

Looking back, Kudrow acknowledged how her role on Friends paved the way for future endeavors. In a 2024 conversation with Today.com, she stated, "Because I was on Friends, I got to create my own shows that didn't have to be as big as Friends, so I could do something like The Comeback or Web Therapy, and that was really fulfilling.”
As Kudrow continues to evolve in her career, her reflections on Friends reveal both the challenges and opportunities that shaped her journey.
