MAGA Commentator Ridiculed for 'Embarrassing Misinterpretation' of Iconic Fantasy Series

On Thursday, MAGA commentator Jack Posobiec ignited a firestorm of ridicule among “Lord of the Rings” enthusiasts by asserting that the beloved novels lack overt Christian themes. This assertion stands in stark contrast to the views of J.R.R. Tolkien, who explicitly described his work as “fundamentally” Catholic.

“I’ve heard people try to make the argument that ‘Lord of the Rings’ is overtly Christian and I hate to burst the bubble, guys, but you’re just wrong,” Posobiec declared during a segment of his “Human Events Daily” podcast.

He elaborated, “There’s nothing overtly Christian about ‘Lord of the Rings.’ Uh, there’s no church in it, there’s no faith in it, there’s no Christ figure — there’s none of these things. And honestly, ‘Lord of the Rings,’ if it’s anything, ‘Lord of the Rings’ is overtly pagan.”

Unbeknownst to him, Tolkien had previously articulated in a 1953 letter that “The Lord of the Rings is of course a fundamentally religious and Catholic work,” a fact that critics were quick to highlight.

Responses on social media came swiftly, with one user remarking, “This may be one of the stupidest takes to ever have been uttered.” Another chimed in, “Tolkien literally said ‘The Lord of the Rings is of course fundamentally religious and Catholic.’ Not hard guys. On what level that occurs is another question.”

While the religious motifs in Tolkien's work are often subtle rather than explicit, they are undeniably woven into the narrative. Tolkien himself noted that he chose to exclude “all references to anything like ‘religion’” because he believed that “the religious element is absorbed into the story and the symbolism” itself.

Posobiec further complicated his argument by suggesting that admiration for the series by figures like Stephen Colbert undermines its supposed Christian themes. “You got these libtards like [Stephen] Colbert who, like, love it. And if this thing is like, oh, it’s overtly Christian, I’m like, well then why does a guy like Colbert love it so much?” he stated.

Colbert, a practicing Catholic, has openly discussed his faith on his show and recently announced plans to write a script for an upcoming installment in the “Rings” franchise under director Peter Jackson.

Posobiec's assertion that Tolkien's works are “overtly Pagan” also fell flat, given that Tolkien was not only a devout Catholic but also contributed to translating The Jerusalem Bible. This revelation only fueled further mockery directed at the MAGA pundit across social media platforms.
