MAGA Congressman Brushes Off Kash Patel Drinking Allegations: ‘I’ve Seen Plenty of Guys Have Fun’
A Republican congressman has come to the defense of FBI Director Kash Patel following allegations of excessive drinking reported by a prominent magazine last week, labeling the claims as trivial.
Patel, who has dismissed the article as a “hit piece,” announced on Monday his intention to sue for defamation, seeking a staggering $250 million in damages.
“While critics are free to challenge the FBI's leadership, they crossed a legal boundary by publishing an article filled with false and fabricated claims aimed at tarnishing Director Patel’s reputation and forcing him out of office,” his legal team stated in the lawsuit.
On Capitol Hill, Georgia Republican Rep. Rich McCormick expressed skepticism about the allegations when questioned by a reporter. He stated he sees no reason to consider the claims against Patel as a “national security concern.”
“I’m not aware of any issues regarding his drinking,” McCormick remarked. “I haven’t heard any rumors or concerns. He’s been doing his job exceptionally well, so I don’t see why this should be controversial.”
When pressed about Patel being spotted enjoying beers with members of the U.S. men’s ice hockey team during the Winter Olympics, McCormick maintained that individuals’ leisure activities are their own concern.
“As a Marine, I’ve seen many guys enjoy themselves,” he noted. “What people do in their spare time is their business.”
“I think many Americans would find it unfair to suggest that one can’t socialize with friends and still perform their job effectively during the week. As long as it doesn’t negatively impact his work, I’m fine with it.”
Reflecting on his own experiences, McCormick added, “Back in my rugby days, I enjoyed going out and having fun with my friends. There’s nothing wrong with that.”
Over the weekend, Patel appeared on a news program where he not only criticized the magazine’s reporting but also claimed to possess “evidence” that would substantiate President Trump’s assertion that the 2020 election was “stolen” through a widespread conspiracy.
Speculation has circulated in Washington that Trump might consider dismissing Patel, especially after losing three cabinet members—Kristi Noem, Pam Bondi, and Lori Chavez-DeRemer—in quick succession.
The possibility of Patel delivering on a key issue for Trump could provide him with some reprieve.
However, Trump’s known aversion to alcohol, stemming from personal family experiences, may lead him to avoid prolonging the controversy.
A petition on MoveOn has garnered nearly 30,000 signatures calling for an investigation into Patel’s alleged misconduct.
Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar from Minnesota indicated on Monday that the Senate Judiciary Committee is moving toward an inquiry. “We need an immediate hearing with Kash Patel,” she stated during an interview. “If he says, ‘See you in court,’ he should also say, ‘See you in the Judiciary Committee.’”
Klobuchar criticized Patel’s response to the allegations, suggesting that instead of resigning or providing facts, he resorts to legal action. “This administration consistently attacks journalism, and these lawsuits often end up being dismissed,” she concluded.
