MAGA Senator’s ‘War Aroma’ Sparks Fierce Backlash from Veterans Group
Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) faced intense criticism from a progressive veterans group on Monday after he described the “smell” of war while defending Donald Trump’s rhetoric regarding Iran.
VoteVets, a political action committee dedicated to electing Democratic veterans to Congress, did not hold back in their condemnation of Mullin’s remarks made during a Fox News segment, especially given his absence from military service.
“And fortunately you have President Hegseth. Err, I said President Hegseth, Secretary Hegseth, that has got a great relationship with President Trump and President Hegseth’s been there. He’s done that,” Mullin stumbled while attempting to praise Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, mistakenly calling him “President” twice.
Social media users quickly seized on Mullin’s comments, pointing out the disconnect between his vivid imagery of war and his lack of firsthand experience. The “President Hegseth” slip-up became fodder for mockery.
VoteVets responded sharply, stating, “Sen. Mullin probably thinks war smells like Mt. Dew, couch cushions, and control sweat because Call of Duty is the closest he’s ever been to war.”
One user tweeted directly at Mullin, emphasizing his age during significant military events: “Sir, you were 24 on 9/11. You were 25 when the U.S. illegally invaded Iraq. You were 28 when I enlisted after high school. You didn't serve. You were an able-bodied young man who chose to inherit your daddy's business instead of serving.”
Additionally, a fact-check revealed that Mullin has never served in the military nor experienced combat firsthand, further fueling the backlash against his comments.
