Mavericks Snag Former No. 1 Pick in Shocking Trade Deal

Jul 20 2026

The Dallas Mavericks just pulled off a jaw-dropping trade, snatching former No. 1 pick Zaccahrie Risacher from the Atlanta Hawks, adding to their roster alongside franchise cornerstone Cooper Flagg.

ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania broke the news of this blockbuster three-team trade. The Mavericks sent guard Ryan Nembhard to the Hawks, while the Oklahoma City Thunder facilitated the deal by sending 2025 All-Defensive First Team member Lu Dort to Atlanta.

The Thunder walked away without any players but secured three second-round picks in upcoming NBA Drafts. Fans were left stunned by the player movement, especially with the involvement of high-profile names like Dort and Risacher.

Dort, a 2025 All-NBA Defensive First Team selection, will bolster the Hawks' defense. Atlanta reached the NBA Playoffs but suffered a first-round collapse against the New York Knicks, marked by multiple blowouts as the Knicks surged toward their championship run.

Risacher, standing at 6-foot-8, was the Hawks' No. 1 pick in the 2024 Draft. He averaged 9.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 45.5% from the field. The 21-year-old Frenchman is still developing his all-around game but now joins Flagg and another former No. 1 pick, Kyrie Irving, on a Mavericks team looking to improve.

Comparisons have been drawn between Risacher and players like Mikal Bridges of the Knicks, Cam Johnson of the Denver Nuggets, and Michael Porter Jr. of the Brooklyn Nets, highlighting his potential impact in the NBA. If he can reach that level, it would significantly benefit the Mavericks as they build for the future.

In addition to this trade, Dallas selected Michigan star Morez Johnson Jr. with the No. 9 pick in this past year's NBA Draft, marking him as the first of three Wolverines players to go in the first round. The team also hired former Michigan coach Dusty May after parting ways with Jason Kidd several months ago.

Last season, the Mavericks finished with a dismal record of 26-56, as Irving struggled with injuries. They also traded big man Anthony Davis to the Washington Wizards during Flagg's impressive NBA Rookie of the Year campaign.

While adding Risacher doesn't instantly catapult the Mavericks into contender status, his growth alongside Flagg's rise as a potential NBA All-Star could position Dallas to make significant noise in upcoming seasons.

Risacher averaged 9.6 points per game last season.
