Nancy Mace Declared 'Dumbest Member of Congress' Over Absurd 'Trans Mice' Claims
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) earned the title of "dumbest member of Congress" after making a ludicrous assertion about taxpayer-funded "trans mice."
She unleashed a viral tweet claiming that American taxpayers are financing experiments on these so-called "trans mice."
"Animals should not be used for radical transgender experiments," Mace declared, following her recent defeat in the primary for the Palmetto State's Republican gubernatorial nomination. "This is not science. This is ideological cruelty paid for by the American taxpayers."
Accompanying her tweet was an image of a mouse touching a human hand, emblazoned with the message, "NO TRANS MICE." Mace announced she had introduced a "TRANS MICE Act" aimed at halting the alleged experimentation.
"No federal funds may be used to conduct, support, or fund research aimed at altering an animal’s biological sex," she stated. "No hormones. No surgeries. No taxpayer dollars spent mutilating animals in the name of transgender ideology. This legislation brings accountability, ends taxpayer-funded cruelty, and ensures science serves the public, not ideology."
As her post gained traction, it was met with a community note that fact-checked her claims regarding trans mice.
The note clarified that "'trans mice' refers to transgenic mice, not transgender mice. Transgenic mice are defined as mice that have incorporated foreign DNA into their genome, allowing for the study of gene function and disease mechanisms, particularly in cancer research."

Mace quickly responded, insisting she was not referring to transgenic mice but rather to "federally funded transgender-related experiments on animals." She provided no evidence to support her claims and avoided using the term "trans mice" in her follow-up replies.
"This post is not about transgenic mice. It is about federally funded transgender-related experiments on animals," she reiterated. "The bill is called the Transgender Research on Animals Now Stops and Money for Ideological Cruelty Eliminated Act, also known as the TRANS MICE Act. The Community Note addresses 'transgenic mice,' which is a completely different topic."
Former President Donald Trump echoed Mace's claims last year, alleging that taxpayer money was being used for studies that were "making mice transgender."
Like Mace, he seemed to reference medical research projects unrelated to gender-affirming care or trans individuals.
Trump boasted at the time that the short-lived Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) had canceled several contracts related to research on transgenic mice.
Critics wasted no time flooding Mace's comments with ridicule, with one user labeling her mix-up as "depressingly funny."
"It’s depressingly funny that these people don’t understand the word transgenic. Transgenic research is how we now have mass-produced insulin. Nobody is making trans 'gender' mice. Wtf," one user remarked.

Another user, who works with transgenic mouse models for cancer research, called Mace's post "objectively one of the funniest things I’ve seen a real-life politician post."
One critic went as far as to label Mace "the dumbest member of Congress."
"Apparently this is not an April Fools joke," another user quipped. "This person really doesn’t know that trans mice are transgenic and not transgender."
A fifth user humorously noted that for Mace, "English is hard," listing five words with the prefix "trans" that have no connection to transgender issues.
"Translation: Not transgender. Transmission: Not transgender. Transportation: Not transgender. Transatlantic: Not transgender. Transgenic: Also not transgender. English is hard," they wrote.
The National Cancer Institute defines transgenic mice as "mice that have had DNA from another source put into their DNA."
Foreign DNA is inserted into the nucleus of a fertilized mouse egg, integrating into every cell and tissue of the new mouse.
These mice are primarily utilized in laboratory settings for disease research.
