Non-profit Founder’s Outrageous Claim: ‘This is the Land of Opportunity’

Jun 06 2026

“I failed 20 times, but I was able to accomplish my American Dream.” This blunt admission from Kilimanjaro Robbs, co-founder of the Hidden Genius Project, cuts through the fluff. The California-based non-profit focuses on mentoring young black men in technology and entrepreneurship, yet Robbs’ journey is littered with setbacks.

Robbs, an American citizen, declares his love for the United States. He boldly states, “this is the land of opportunity,” a phrase he acknowledges as cliché. He points to the structures in place that supposedly create these opportunities.

He lists universities and scholarships, but also highlights Pell Grants—government-funded low-interest loans that facilitate education. He emphasizes the Small Business Administration (SBA) program, which provides loans for starting or acquiring businesses, a luxury not available in many other countries.

When confronted with claims of lack of access, Robbs retorts, “There are opportunities here.” He insists various organizations offer free services and job training, providing pathways to escape difficult situations.

Robbs contrasts this with his experiences in Jamaica, where he witnessed extreme poverty and the struggles people endure to survive. “I’ve seen what poverty looks like,” he states, underscoring his gratitude for the support systems available in America.

He describes a sense of community in the U.S., where “someone’s always at the end of the phone” and there’s a collective concern for well-being. He believes that with the right encouragement and support, “bright minds” can achieve remarkable feats.

The American Dream Video Project aims to showcase real stories that highlight pathways to opportunity. This initiative is part of the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. The center serves as a cultural institution in Washington, DC, featuring interactive exhibits and narratives about achieving the American Dream.
