Prince Harry Grins and Bears It After Crushing Court Loss

Jul 07 2026

Prince Harry faced a humiliating court defeat, yet he stepped onto the stage in London with a forced smile. The Duke of Sussex delivered a welcome address at the 14th Invictus Games Foundation Conversation: From Policy to Practice conference at Chatham House.

He took the podium shortly after a UK High Court judge ruled against him in his case against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL). The ruling came as a blow, dismissing all claims in a high-profile lawsuit he filed alongside Elton John, Elizabeth Hurley, and four others in 2022.

Despite the setback, Harry maintained an upbeat demeanor during his speech. He expressed gratitude to the charity’s supporters, partners, and sponsors, then made a quip about the venue's air conditioning, saying, “It is one of the few rooms … in the UK that has air conditioning, so I can understand why every seat is full.”

The audience erupted in laughter as he continued with a smile, “I get it.”

Harry spoke for six minutes about the Invictus Games, an international multi-sport event for wounded, injured, and sick military personnel. He emphasized the organization’s core belief: “The unconquered human spirit exists in every nation and our shared responsibility is to create the conditions in which it can flourish.”

His trip to England began on Monday, leading up to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham. He kicked off his visit with an appearance at the “Shoot the People” documentary premiere on Monday evening.

The court's decision marked a significant end to Harry's years-long media battle with various British press outlets. A hearing is set for July 29 and 30 to address any disputes arising from the ruling.

Harry has yet to issue a statement regarding the court's decision. He is currently in England without his wife Meghan Markle and their two children—Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet—who remain at home in Montecito, California.

Initially planning to travel with his family, Harry changed course after being denied taxpayer-funded security.
